The Department of Environmental Science is one of the largest departments at the Faculty of Science. The department consists of four units with more than 190 researchers, teachers, doctoral students and technical/administrative staff from over 30 countries. Research and teaching focus on atmospheric science, biogeochemistry, chemical contaminants and (eco)toxicology. As a Research Engineer at the Department of Environmental Science you are a key person and part of a dynamic research environment with a strong international profile.
The department has a strong focus on research (>100 peer-reviewed research articles per year), spanning from couplings between climate change and biogeochemical cycles (atmosphere-land-ocean) to the sources, transport and effects of environmental contaminants. At the Unit for Biogeochemistry we are studying many aspects of the composition and functioning of the Earth system and large-scale biogeochemical cycles, and how these are affected by and feed back on anthropogenic perturbations such as climate warming. Two of our prioritized research areas are (i) how thawing land and subsea permafrost systems in the Arctic affects large-scale carbon cycling, including triggering release of greenhouse gases, and (ii) how air pollution in particularly South Asia affects the composition of the atmosphere and the climate.
We analyse specific molecules (i.e., gases and biomarkers), major and minor elements, isotope ratios and the compound-specific isotope fingerprint in matrices such as air, seawater, sediments and soil, along with many other geochemical and geophysical system parameters.
The Unit for Biogeochemistry is now recruiting a Research Engineer to function as support to ongoing research activities.
Main responsibilities will be:
- Interacting with researchers in the group and with local observatory operators.
- Ordering supplies and preparing these for deployment.
- Shipping and receiving instruments, consumables and samples.
- Receiving and properly storing samples (air, water, sediment), and maintaining sample records, primarily from Arctic expeditions.
- Prepare samples for analysis.
- Establish protocols for analysis, calibration and maintenance of a new Thermo elemental analyzer – istope ratio – mass spectrometer (EA-irMS).
- Perform analyses of filter and sediment samples for carbon and nitrogen concentrations and isotopic composition with Therma EA-irMS.
- Contribute to good lab practises/routines, a sound working environment and be adaptive and ready to contribute to other practical needs that surfaces in the research projects.
We seek a well-organized, hands-on and service-oriented person with:
- High ability for independent problem solving.
- M.Sc. or Ph.D. degree, likely in environmental, atmospheric or earth sciences, or in analytical chemistry.
- Laboratory work experience.
- Collaborative skills and good proficiency in English are required.
Terms of employment
This is a full-time, time-limited position for up to 12 months. Start and end dates are negotiable. Salaries at Stockholm University are determined individually; therefore, please indicate your requested salary. Start date immediately.
