Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research?
We are seeking a highly motivated person to join the Östling team at SciLifeLab as a research engineer to work on drug screening for cancer and infectious diseases.
Our group does primarily research on precision cancer medicine with the aim of optimizing treatments for individual cancer patients based on molecular profiling and functional drug testing. Additionally, we are developing a novel drug repurposing strategy for SARS-CoV-2 based on host cell responses to drug treatments. Our team's overall goal is to develop a systems biology framework to match targeted therapies and drug combinations using omics- profiling to combat different diseases.
Your mission
Your mission is to be part and help in a leading research environment for functional precision systems medicine research. The main focus will be the establishment of bladder cancer models from patient material as well as performing DNA and RNA extraction from these samples. A second large aspect of this position will be the development of high-throughput assays for drug testing on various cell lines and primary material, by biochemical or high-content imaging screening. Participating in general lab maintenance, performing data and image analysis, and entering the data to research databases is expected. The candidate must be able to present and communicate the scientific results in English, both in written and oral format, as well as help in teaching common laboratory techniques to group members.
Your profile
You hold an MSc in a relevant field, such as biomedical science, molecular and cell biology or biotechnology. Hands-on experience in tissue/cell culture techniques including primary cell culture and handling small-molecule drugs is required. Applicants with experience in high-throughput screening techniques (Cell-titer Glo- and fluorescence image-based assays), subsequent image analysis and previous knowledge on infectious diseases will be prioritized. Experience in assay developing for biosafety environments and handling biological materials originating from the BSL environment upon decontaminating is a strong merit. Understanding of softwares such as Cell Profiler and Harmony as well as coding in R language are highly valued. The candidate should be self-driven, proactive and possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills, be service-minded and enjoy working with others. The individual should also be organized, responsible, demonstrate good research practices and willing to learn new techniques.
What do we offer?
Päivi Östling group is a creative and inspiring environment full of expertise and curiosity where each researcher has possibilities to develop individually as well as a team. Our host university Karolinska Institutet (KI) vision is to pursue the development of knowledge about life and to promote better health for all. At KI, we conduct successful medical research and hold the largest range of medical education in Sweden. KI is a state university, which entitles to several benefits such as extended holiday and generous occupational pension. Employees also have access to our modern gym for free and receive reimbursements for medical care.
Your work will be carried out at the Science for Life Laboratory (SciLifeLab), which is a leading national infrastructure for next-generation life science research in Sweden. SciLifeLab is jointly operated by the four host universities: Karolinska Institutet, KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm University and Uppsala University, and it has facilities in four other universities across Sweden. There are over 1000 people working at SciLifeLab, either in research groups or in the infrastructure facilities, most of them in the KI Solna campus and in Uppsala. This position resides at the Solna campus.
