Description of the workplace 

The position is at the Department of Computer Science within the division Robotics and Semantic Systems (RSS). The RSS division focuses on research and teaching in AI, Machine Learning, Robotics and Robotic Learning, Human-Robot Interaction, and Natural Language Processing. Together with the Dept. of Automatic Control, the division operates RobotLab LTH, which gives access to many types of robots.

You will collaborate closely with ML experts from both academia and industry, support international benchmarking challenges such as GENEA and VOT, and contribute to the annual WASP summer school on multimodal modelling of human communication. The position also gives access to first-class computing infrastructure, including the WARA Common computing centre and the Kebnekaise and Berzelius supercomputers, and offers opportunities to co-author scientific publications and shape the development of AI in media and language.

Work duties 

As a Research Engineer in WARA Media and Language (WARA M&L), your primary duties are to design, implement and host a Machine Learning platform for the research community within WARA M&L. The platform will be supported by the resources provided from WARA Common, a sister arena within WASP and HPC2N (high performance computing cluster). The work covers all aspects of the platform construction: Interviews with partners from academia and industry, elaboration of needs, design and implementation of the system, management of data sets, hosting and sharing of data, providing data annotation services, benchmarking machine learning challenges and user support.

The work also involves providing technical support for the annual GENEA challenge and Online VOT benchmark. Apart from benchmarking challenges, you will also be working on the annual WASP Summer school event, where you will be implementing and developing student projects on multimodal modelling of human communication.


Qualifications
Required qualifications for the position are:
  • Bachelor's degree or higher in Computer Science or a related field
  • Practical and theoretical experience in Machine Learning
  • Experience in software development
  • Demonstrated ability to set up, configure, and maintain distributed development environments that support collaborative AI projects
  • Experience designing and operating AI platform components, including resource management, data hosting, and data-sharing services
  • Solid grounding in collecting, processing, and structuring data for AI workflows
  • Experience with Linux-based system administration
  • Programming experience, including shell scripting, Python, and working with APIs
  • Basic knowledge of virtualization, networking, and computer security
  • Experience working with containers (e.g., Docker, Singularity) and version control/CI/CD tools (e.g., GitHub)
  • Good collaborative skills and the ability to work in environments with both academic and industrial partners
  • Ability to work independently, in a structured manner and with a problem-solving approach
  • Good communication skills and the ability to provide support to users with varying technical backgrounds

Additional qualifications for the position are:
  • Familiarity with front-end, back-end, JS frameworks, and database technologies
  • Experience conducting scientific research in Machine Learning, AI, or a closely related field
  • Experience providing technical support for ML/AI infrastructure, including troubleshooting for end-users (e.g., researchers) and authoring technical documentation
  • Experience as a teaching assistant or in leading technical workshops and mentoring students on project-based work
  • Experience with Unity, Blender, Unreal Engine, or Omniverse
  • Experience with K8s, Docker Registry, Docker Swarm, or MLOps/AIOps frameworks
  • Pedagogical ability, for example through experience of supervision, workshops or project-based student work
  • Ability to contribute to an open, inclusive and supportive work environment
  • Initiative and an interest in contributing to the development of research infrastructure and future AI applications

The position is a fixed term position for one year at 100% of full time, starting on October 1st 2026 or by agreement.
