Are you interested in working with superconducting accelerator equipment, with the support of competent and friendly colleagues in an international environment? Are you looking for an employer that invests in sustainable employeeship and offers safe, favourable working conditions? We welcome you to apply for a research engineer position at Uppsala University.
The Department of Physics and Astronomy is looking for a research engineer who will work with particle accelerators and research instrumentation. The Department of Physics and Astronomy is one of the largest at Uppsala University with around 400 employees, and is located in the Ångström Laboratory in Uppsala. The department includes the FREIA laboratory, which works with research and development on particle accelerators and instrumentation. FREIA collaborates with large research facilities, such as the European Spallation Source (ESS) in Lund and CERN in Switzerland, and contributes to scientific discovery through the development of particle accelerators and its technology. FREIA is directly involved in the realization of new particle accelerators for research through the testing of superconducting magnets, cavities and cryomodules. Presently, we are at the starting point of a new large-scope project involving tests of superconducting radiofrequency cavities and cryomodules, which will later be installed in the new proton accelerator, MINERVA, in Belgium.
We are now looking to expand the team working with these tests, as well as with supporting other research activities in the FREIA laboratory. Applicants are offered the opportunity to work in an exciting, modern research environment and will have the possibility to collaborate with leading groups in experimental and theoretical physics both locally and globally.
Duties
The successful candidate will be delivering engineering solutions that satisfy the scientific requirements of given experimental setups, which include high-power electronics, microwave sources, advanced measurement equipment used in accelerator and instrumentation technology. Regular reporting of the different development steps, regular communication with specialists on the different topics, in Uppsala and at other laboratories, participation in the operation and evaluation of experiments at the FREIA Laboratory, is expected. The projects are organized on national and international level and require occasional travel. Occasional shift work can be needed. The successful candidate will:
- Be part of the FREIA team and support the team in low and high-power RF measurements, calibrations and test setups.
- Troubleshoot devices related to RF, electronics and vacuum equipment.
- Maintenance, operation and development of the infrastructure at FREIA.
- Evaluation of superconducting microwave cavities.
- Collect data, analyze and interpret the results.
- Document and report on work performed.
- Present your work both in writing and orally to a wide range of audiences.
- Keep contact with external suppliers of goods and services.
- Procure on-demand manufactured items and in-stock components.
Requirements
The applicant must have either a Master’s degree in physics, electrical engineering or related area, or have acquired the equivalent skills and competences through professional experience, relevant certifications or advanced training. You shall demonstrate a drive and determination to achieve results, be open minded and flexible in relation to the type of work assigned. You shall take responsibility, shall organize multiple tasks simultaneously, and have a genuine interest in research and technology.
The following experience and competencies are required:
- Experience from working with and knowledge in electronics.
- Strong ability to think creatively.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
- Good oral and written proficiency in English.
- Ability to read and understand technical information.
- Ability to communicate well both technically and non-technically.
- Ability to produce good written work and reports.
Additional qualifications
The following experience and competencies are an advantage:
- Experience from working with advanced measurement equipment such as oscilloscopes, Vector network analyzer and spectrum analyzer.
- Experience from working with microwave amplifiers, including high power systems.
- Experience from working with Labview and FPGA programming.
- Good oral and written proficiency in Swedish.
