The Centre for Digital Humanities (CDH) is looking for a research engineer with a focus on simulation, visualization, and data analysis. CDH is a multidisciplinary research infrastructure which was established in 2015. CDH is open to researchers, teaching staff and doctoral students working at the University of Gothenburg as well as at other Swedish and international higher education institutions, research institutes and cultural heritage organisations. In addition to expertise in several humanities disciplines, we have expertise in digital technology and method development, data management and digital knowledge theory. More specific areas include: Digital text and data mining, textual analysis, spatio-temporal data visualisation, 3D visualisations (object and spatial contexts), AI and image recognition, virtual and augmented reality simulation, agent-based simulations, historical environment modelling, critical digital humanities, archive and interface design, information modelling and data management for the humanities, network and cluster analysis, and statistical analysis for the humanities.

Duties 

The successful applicant will contribute their skills in simulation, visualization and data management/analysis in the research program Maritime Encounters (funded by Riksbankens Jubileumsfond). In the project, an international and interdisciplinary team of researchers focuses on the importance of the sea for long-distance contacts and the development of cultures. The responsibilities include advancing the development of a tool (https://voyager.dh.gu.se) for agent-based simulation of sea routes in time and space. The responsibilities also include analysing data, visualising and communicating results together with researchers.

The applicant is also expected to participate in the Centre for Digital Humanities' development and strengthen existing infrastructures for research on digital cultural heritage. The position includes working in an international, interdisciplinary, and creative research environment with regular meetings, workshops and seminars.

The position provides ample opportunities for gaining new subject knowledge and conducting in-depth research, as well as ample room for personal growth and initiative. 


Qualifications 
  • Master's degree in computer science, data science, physics or related field with a focus on numerical simulation or data analysis     
  • Documented experience of working with data analysis, agent-based simulation, and machine learning      
  • Excellent programming skills (e.g., Python, R, or Javascript)       
  • Documented experience of data management      
  • Experience in software version management, such as Git, SVN     
  • Good communication skills in speech and writing and good ability to cooperate with others

The following are also considered a plus 

  • Experience in geographic information systems (GIS) applications or software packages, such as ArcGIS, QGIS, Leaflet       
  • Experience in numerical simulation       
  • Experience in database management

Great emphasis will be placed on personal suitability for the position.
