The Department of Historical Studies is part of the Faculty of Humanities. The department conducts teaching and research in the three subjects: History, Archaeology, and Classical Archaeology and Ancient History. Teaching takes place at all levels with over 650 full-year study places. The research takes place both within the individual subjects and in major interdisciplinary projects, where national and international collaboration is an important element. The Department currently has about 90 employees: researchers, teachers, PhD students, and administrators. The Department is centrally located in Gothenburg. The archaeological research at the Department covers all subjects from the Paleolithic to the modern era with a strong focus on the Bronze Age.

The Swedish Rock Art Archives (SHFA) is research infrastructure at the University of Gothenburg, located at the Department of Historical Studies. SHFA is currently seeking an experienced research engineer for 24 months with a scope of 100%. The infrastructure is dedicated to developing methods to meet higher standards and secure high-quality research. The SHFA has become the largest digital archive for rock art documentation in Europe. The researchers and staff at the SHFA represent an international team and runs four international, third-party funded research projects concerned with 3D documentation and modern image analysis. In addition to materials and information about rock art documentation from Sweden, SHFA also has materials and information about rock art from Denmark, Italy, Norway and Spain. SHFA conducts a number of research projects with a focus on documentation of rock carvings that operate on both a national and international basis, including a focus on AI but also on chronology and contact routes during the Bronze Age. SHFA has in collaboration with the Center for Digital Humanities (CDH) developed an interdisciplinary platform for data-driven analysis with the use of methods from the fields of Computer Vision and Machine Learning for image recognition, object detection, and segmentation. This work has been implemented into the research infrastructure of the SHFA and aid the work on a mobile app that will be developed during the project. SHFA collaborates closely with the CDH that spans areas such as archeology, digital cultural heritage, computer science, AI and digital humanities. CDH is a research environment, in both a national and an international context, covering the domains of digital humanities. CDH focuses on the development of methods and tools as well as the critical investigation of the consequences of digitalization within three intersecting areas: digital text analysis, data visualization and -publication and digital epistemology.

Job assignments
The successful candidate will primarily work the Swedish Rock Art Archives (SHFA) interdisciplinary platform for data-driven analysis and use methods from the fields of Computer Vision and Machine Learning for image recognition, object detection, and segmentation. This requires the training of an algorithm based on images derived from 3D data that is capable to recognize different motifs, for example, boats from different periods. This work should be implemented into the research infrastructure of the SHFA and aid the work on a mobile app that will be developed during the project.
Other tasks include helping the project's employees to administer the data sets collected for the research project and to administer and carry out new data collections. Work with digitization and publication of 2 and 3D documentation of rock carvings to SHFA:s database and web portal will also be included. The research engineer will work in an international and interdisciplinary research environment and are expected to participate in regular meetings. Finally, you will also work with some of the teaching assignments that SHFA and the research project conduct as well as the museums that SHFA and the research project collaborate with.
The successful candidate will also work closely with the team at the Centre for Digital Humanities and this work implies, for example building an infrastructure for digital cultural heritage research projects as well as support and collaborate with researchers at the Faculty of Humanities and beyond.
Eligibility
Qualified for appointment as assistant researcher has a
-PhD in archaeology
-Practical experience of Data Science, Software Engineering, Information Systems, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Mathematics, or a Humanistic discipline (with specialization in Computer Vision, Image Processing, Artificial Intelligence) or related field.
- Proficiency in programming and scripting languages (for example, Python or R).
- Practical experience in GIS, Computer Vision, Computer Graphics, Deep Learning and/or Machine Learning.
- Good communication skills and ability to cooperate.
- Experience in Cultural Heritage 2D-3D digitization and analysis
