The research group of Associate Professor Dr. Federico Iovino is the only group at Karolinska Institutet performing research on bacterial infections of the brain. Permanent neurological disabilities in both children and adults are often caused by bacterial infections of the brain, and these are due to a damage of neurons caused by the infection. The objective of this project is to understand the molecular mechanisms regulating the interaction between bacterial pathogens and neurons leading to bacterial invasion of neuronal cells with consequent neuronal cell death.

Your mission
Suitable candidate should possess excellent knowledge of clinical microbiology, bacteriology and neurobiology, good experience and knowledge in: 1. Cell culturing of neurons of human and mouse origin, 2. Molecular bacteriology (Streptococcus pneumoniae), 3. Protein expression analysis, 4. Felasa-certified knowledge and skills.

Your profile
Qualified to be employed as a research assistant is one who has obtained at least a Bachelor’s degree in Biomedicine. It is considered as an advantage if you have already completed your Master’s degree within the last year.
