Research assistant in molecular environmental analysis

We are looking for a person who has an interest in analysis of and method development around water and wastewater.
About the position

The successful candidate will work in the laboratory of the Swedish Environmental Epidemiology Center (SEEC) and within the algal toxin knowledge center (www.slu.se/algtox ). The primary tasks are participating in sample collection campaigns, as well as processing and analyzing water and wastewater samples within these monitoring programs. In addition, the candidate will be involved in method development and pilot studies aiming to detect new targets for the monitoring programs. Accordingly, the successful candidate will be involved both in routine analyses and novel method applications. The person we hire will be also expected to aid the communication with stakeholders.


Your profile

As a minimum requirement, the successful candidate will have a university degree (preferably at BSc or Masters level) in biology, molecular biology, microbiology, environmental sciences, bioengineering or related subject. You must also have experience in data processing in R as well as producing proper written electronic documentation of laboratory work. Moreover, you should have practical experience with environmental sample processing for epidemiological analyses including nucleic acid extractions and qPCR from water and wastewater samples. It is considered a merit if you have previous experience in running ELISA analyses and in using microscopy for identification of organisms. 

We are looking for a candidate who can work independently in a structured manner, with attention to detail and good social skills to contribute to the general operation of the lab. The working language in the group is English but proficient written and oral knowledge of Swedish language is necessary for the communication and reporting towards our external partners. European B driving license is also a requirement for the sampling campaigns.


About us

The Department of Aquatic Sciences and Assessment is working with applied environmental science, with a national responsibility for assessing the condition of Swedish surface waters with respect to water chemistry, pollution and aquatic biota. The research focuses on geochemical and hydrological processes, aquatic ecology and biodiversity, microbial ecology as well as on environmental chemistry and aquatic ecotoxicology. The department has some 140 employees, of which approximately half are researchers/doctoral students and the other half are technical and administrative staff.
