Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research?

The Department of Laboratory of Medicine, located in Huddinge Campus, is one of Karolinska Institutet’s largest departments with seven research divisions including Biomolecular and Cellular Medicine (BCM), where the project will be carried out.
350 people are employed at the department, half of which are PhD-students. The Centre provides the facilities needed for cell- and molecular biology research and the possibility to perform research in vivo.

The Zain-Smith lab works on two major projects, one related to neurodegenerative disorders and oligonucleotide therapy and the other related to B lymphocyte development and the BTK tyrosine kinase. Mutations in BTK cause X-linked agammaglobulinemia and inhibitors of BTK have become important medicines for the treatment of leukemia and lymphoma. The research aims at understanding the role of BTK in cells and especially how the inhibitors function, including the analysis of resistance mutations.

Your mission

We are seeking a highly motivated person to join the group of Zain-Smith to work on the analysis of BTK and of BTK inhibitors.

Most of the research will be conducted utilizing cultured cell lines and animal models. The work involves transfection of cells with various BTK mutated constructs and the analysis of how they perform. Cells are activated and the intracellular signaling is monitored using western blotting or FACS analysis of BTK substrates. The main posttranslational modifications are phosphorylation, mainly tyrosine phosphorylation.

Your profile

The person is eligible for a position as Forskningsassistent if he or she has obtained a PhD.

The applicant should have a solid background in work with cells and analysis of proteins (Immunoblotting, ELISA, and IP) and RNA (qPCR). Extensive experience in cell culture work, protein biochemistry and small-molecule interactions is essential, and skills in different microscopy techniques is advantageous. The project will include work on cells from animals.

In addition, excellent proficiency in both spoken and written English is essential. We are looking for an energetic and passionate person who fits in, and actively contributes to our team.
