A one year research assistant position is available within the biostatistics group at the department of Medical Epidemiology and Biostatistics at Karolinska Institutet, Stockholm. The Department of Medical Epidemiology and Biostatistics (MEB) is among the largest departments of epidemiology in Europe with special focus on increasing our knowledge of the aetiology of different diseases. Our department consists of researchers, doctoral students, biostatisticians, data collectors and database administrators as well as administrative personnel, in total some 250 staff. The department is situated at campus Solna. Further information can be found at ki.se/meb.

The biostatistics group at MEB comprises 4 professors, 3 senior lecturers, 5 PhD-level statisticians, 4 masters-level statisticians, and 7 doctoral students. The group is involved in a wide variety of research projects, including population-based cohort and case-control studies, twin and family studies, survival analyses, predictive modeling, genetic epidemiology and bioinformatics.


Your mission

The employment as Research Assistant would be for one year. The purpose of the employment as a research assistant is to support the research process and to develop as a researcher with the possibility of progressing to undertake a PhD.

Our group works on the development of methods for analyzing data from large, detailed studies of breast cancer and mammography screening (with large-scale genetics and image data). Research projects are cross-disciplinary and involve collaborating with cancer epidemiologists and radiologists. Possible projects are in simulation modelling and assisting/collaborating with radiologists exploring the use of artificial intelligence in breast cancer diagnostics. 


Your profile

The position requires a second-cycle university degree in statistics or a related discipline (e.g. mathematics or engineering, with courses in statistics), as well as programming skills. The applicant should have a strong interest in heath data analysis and in statistical methodology. Strong written and oral communication skills in English are essential, as the work environment is international. Important personal qualities for the role include strong analytical skills, good communication ability, being performance oriented and having the ability to work in a structured way.
