Uppsala University is a comprehensive research-intensive university with a strong international standing. Our ultimate goal is to conduct education and research of the highest quality and relevance to make a long-term difference in society. Our most important assets are all the individuals whose curiosity and dedication make Uppsala University one of Sweden’s most exciting workplaces. Uppsala University has over 54,000 students, more than 7,500 employees and a turnover of around SEK 8 billion.

Full-time temporary position for 3 months, starting as soon as possible or as agreed upon

Project description
This research projects is about developing bone cements that are better adapted to the surrounding bone, to avoid complications after treatment caused by too large differences in mechanical properties between bone and implanted material. These materials are produced through additives that could affect the biological response to the material in the body. We are specifically interested in the material's cytotoxicity and antibacterial properties.

Work duties
Assist research in the above projects. The work builds on our previous research and is about using a new method developed by our partner at the department of medical cell biology and microbiology to evaluate the antibacterial properties of the material and thereby evaluate the effect of various additives in an effective way. This part of the work will be carried out in our partner's lab. The second part is about evaluating the proportion of residual monomer in the material, as well as its effect on the cytotoxicity of relevant cells in 2D models in vitro. The work will be carried out in a highly interdisciplinary environment.

Qualification requirements
Master's degree, or equivalent, with a focus on materials science, chemistry, biochemistry, biotechnology or similar. We require knowledge and experimental experience of biomaterials, sterile work, and of bacterial and/or cell studies in vitro.

We require good oral and written skills in English.

Personal qualities such as good cooperation and communication skills are very important. You must be purposeful, structured and able to work effectively both individually and in a group. Great emphasis will be placed on personal suitability.

Additional qualifications
Experience in the production and experimental characterization of polymeric bone cement is highly advantageous.
