The Department of Chemistry - Ångström conducts research and education in the chemistry field. The department has more than 270 employees and has a turnover of 290 million SEK. At the department's six programs, we conduct very successful research of a high international standard. We have a large number of externally funded research projects, often with international cooperation and we see continued good growth in our subject area. The department has education assignments in engineering programs and master's programs. More information is available on our website . (https://kemi.uu.se/angstrom/?languageId=1 ).

Duties
Hydrogenase enzymes are the best molecular catalysts known to date with regards to H2 gas production and combustion. Consequently, they are intensively studied due to their biotechnological potential. Projects in the research group focuses on the biochemical characterization of novel examples of this diverse enzyme family to identify those most relevant in a renewable energy context.
Research areas: Biochemistry, molecular biology, biophysics and bioinorganic chemistry.

The applicant will work in interdisciplinary projects that involves biochemistry, molecular biology and biophysics. The primary role of the research assistant in the project will deal with the identification of novel [FeFe] hydrogenases of potential biotechnological relevance, followed by their heterologous expression, isolation and characterization. Selected enzymes will be characterized in depth utilizing a combination of electrochemistry and spectroscopy, with a focus on determining reaction mechanisms and the identification of hydrogenases with novel properties. The work will be performed by the research assistant in collaboration with PhD students, theoreticians, spectroscopists and synthetic chemists at Uppsala University and abroad.

Furthermore, the research assistant is expected to maintain key infrastructure for anaerobic experimentation, e.g. gloveboxes and protein film electrochemistry instrumentation.

Requirements

Applicants must have:

  • A master’s exam within the field of biochemistry, chemistry, molecular biology or other for the position relevant fields.
  • Very good oral and written proficiency in English.
  • Experience in protein film electrochemistry.
  • Previous experience in EPR and FTIR spectroscopy of proteins.
  • Extensive experience in expression and isolation of oxygen sensitive enzymes.
  • Extensive experience in handling biological material in anaerobic gloveboxes.
  • Experience in maintaining gloveboxes.
  • Extensive experience in biochemical assays
  • Theoretical knowledge of microbial biochemistry.

Consideration will also be given to good collaborative skills, drive and independence, and how the applicant’s experience and skills complement and strengthen ongoing research within the department, and how they stand to contribute to its future development.

Additional qualifications

  • Previous experience in preparing and publishing scientific results is meriting.
Previous experience in working with hydrogenase enzymes is highly meriting.
