The Department: The department has about 70 employees, primarily in the city of Skara, which is located in Sweden's most agricultural animal-dense area, as well as in Uppsala and Gothenburg. Agronomists, ethologists, veterinarians, biologists, ethics as well as technical and administrative staff work here. The department is responsible for SLU Götala beef and lamb meat research, located just outside Skara.

Research: The department is responsible for both basic and applied research in the areas animal environment and health, ethology, animal welfare, animal ethics, meat science, ruminant nutrition, agricultural economics and animal production systems. The research is carried out in collaboration with i.e. the agricultural industry, authorities and other universities within regional, national and international networks.

Education: The department educates students at the bachelor and master levels within biology, animal science, veterinary medicine and veterinary nursing programs. These programs include ethology and animal welfare, animals and sustainability, animal science, the veterinary program and the veterinary nursing program.

Duties:

In this role, you will be an integral part of a research project focused on evaluating the personality and well-being of dairy cattle. Your responsibilities will encompass various aspects, such as aiding in the evolution of the research project, gathering data directly from farms, conducting behavioural assessments, managing animal interactions, and assuming charge of the organization and execution of experimental procedures. Additionally, your contributions will extend to facilitating data collection, overseeing data organization, and participating in data analysis endeavours.


Qualifications:

We are in search of a research assistant holding a degree in Biology, Agronomy, Veterinary, or Animal Sciences, coupled with proficiency in Animal Behaviour and Welfare. Master degree in Agronomy focusing on Animal welfare is a bonus. Previous experience working with animals, particularly dairy cows is a requirement. Experience with scientific writing and published papers is also a bonus.

You also must have previous engagement in research investigations and data handling.  Successful completion of a laboratory animal science course is mandatory. Proficiency in both written and spoken English is essential, and proficiency in Swedish is advantageous. Great emphasis will be placed on personal suitability. A driver's license is an advantage, but not a requirement.
