Offer Description

Description of the workplace

The bioDigital matter lab is a research group in the subject Architecture / Form / Design at the Department of Architecture and Built Environment. We are a small group exploring the interface of architecture, computation, fabrication, and biology within a research-by-design framework. The group is particularly interested in possibilities offered by large scale 3d printing, how these can enable a sustainable transformation of the built environment, and how biology can inform and inspire these processes.

The group is actively involved in teaching at master’s and doctoral levels, particularly in the international master’s programme in Digital Architecture and Emergent Futures.

Further information can be found at https://www.abm.lth.se/biodigitalmatter/ and @biodigitalmatter.

The position is also connected to the Center for Construction Robotics, which is a collaboration between the departments of Automatic Control, Computer Science, Architecture and Built Environment, and Building and Environmental Technology.

We offer

Lund University is a public authority which means that employees get particular benefits, generous annual leave and an advantageous occupational pension scheme. Read more on the University website about being a Lund University employee Work at Lund University

Work duties

The holder of the position will be co-developing and operating an experimental 3d-printing platform, intended to test principles of agent-based swarm construction.  The platform combines robot-based clay 3d-printing, machine vision feedback, and a simulated digital twin. You will work together with the project PI and a PhD student, the latter who is developing a parallel and connected project. In the lab, we commonly use ROS, COMPAS, and RobotStudio for robot interfaces, and multiple programming languages, most commonly Python or C#.

Description of the work duties:

  • to further develop and maintain the operational framework connecting robotic 3d printing, 3d-scanning feedback, and an agent model operating on a digital twin.
  • to develop and test various agent-based decision-making algorithms in collaboration with the PI.
  • to materialise the developed generative algorithms through 3d printing and document the results.
  • assist in writing up and publishing results.

Qualifications

Required qualifications for the position are:

  • good oral and written proficiency in English
  • Ability to use CAD software (such as Rhinoceros 3d) in conjunction with programming (preferably Python)
  • familiarity with robotics programming and operation)
  • ability to collaborate and to work independently towards set goals

Additional qualifications for the position are:

  • experience with 3d-printing (particularly with clay or similar LDM techniques, and robot-based implementations)
  • familiarity with frameworks and processes for integration of fabrication, design, and feedback systems
  • a bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Architecture, Computer Science, or Automatic Control
  • experience with research-by-design and computational design in architecture
  • previous experience working with research projects in architecture and technology

Consideration will also be given to how the applicant’s experience and skills complement and strengthen ongoing research within the department, and how they stand to contribute to its future development.

Further information

The position is a fixed term position for 4 months at 100 per cent of full time, starting as soon as possible.

How to apply

Applications are to be submitted via the University’s recruitment system. The application should include a CV and a personal letter justifying your interest in the position and how it matches your qualifications. The application should also include a degree certificate or equivalent and any other document to which you would like to draw attention (copies of grade transcripts, details of referees, letters of recommendation, etc.)

Welcome with your application!
