The Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science's work is based on the best interests of animals, in line with UN's goals for sustainable development. The Faculty is responsible for research, education and collaboration with society on animal management, feeding, breeding, health and welfare and our work is characterized by an evidence-based approach. The faculty's teaching is grounded in our high quality research. The Faculty has prioritized three strategically important research areas: A system perspective on the circular food system, One Health and Digitalization.
The aim of our research within the area of reindeer husbandry is to develop knowledge that strengthens the long-term sustainability of this pastoral production system, and its ability to cope with external stresses from natural factors as well as those caused by other industrial activity and human land use.
The research field of reindeer husbandry is broad, and we will therefore decide the departmental location of the professorship within the Faculty, in connection to the appointment for the position. The professorship is presently located at the Department of Animal Nutrition and Management (HUV), which conducts basic and applied research on animal feeding, nutrition, metabolism, and management of animals, with the goal to secure a sustainable animal production with good animal welfare and production of high quality food. An established reindeer research group at HUV, currently four persons, conducts reindeer husbandry research with particular focus on reindeer biology, nutrition and interactions with the outside world.
Subject area
The subject concerns reindeer management in a broad perspective, with focus on reindeer husbandry as a production system and aspects linked to this, such as nutrition, ecology, animal health and welfare, sustainable food production, and societal, social and economic considerations.
Duties
The candidate, should, within the subject area:
- develop and lead internationally competitive research within the subject area
- develop and lead education at basic and advanced level, including doctoral education
- develop teaching in collaboration with other teachers at the Department, Faculty and University
- plan and carry out teaching and supervision of students at different levels
- be able to teach in Swedish within four years
- maintain existing and develop new national and international networks and collaborations with academia, relevant agencies, organizations, stakeholders and society at large (reindeer husbandry in particular)
- support the strategic development of the Department and Faculty and SLU
- collaborate with others within the Department and at other Departments within and outside SLU
- disseminate research and research results
- disseminate and communicate research findings and contribute with relevant knowledge to society
- apply for external research funding at national and international level
In addition to providing education about reindeer and the reindeer management system, lecturing within related areas at undergraduate level may also be required. Administrative duties are a part of the job.
Qualifications
The successful candidate shall:
- have a doctoral degree in biology, animal science or veterinary medicine, and the qualifications required to be appointed docent (associate professor) or equivalent
- be scientifically skilled within the subject area of this appointment, and have demonstrated an ability to lead and develop successful research within the area
- have documented experience as the main supervisor for doctoral studies
- have a proven ability to obtain external research funding in competition
- be pedagogically skilled, and have the ability to integrate research and scientific perspectives in teaching
- have a very good ability to communicate in written and spoken English.
Assessment criteria
The assessment criteria for appointment as a professor shall foremost be the degree of the scientific expertise required as a qualification for employment.
The assessment of scientific skills will consider
- past and ongoing research
- ability to independently initiate and lead outstanding research
- ability to obtain external research funding in competition
The assessment of pedagogic skills will consider
- planning, conducting and evaluating teaching and examination
- experience of supervision of doctoral students and examination of students
- pedagogic vision
- courses in university teaching or equivalent
Primary emphasis will be placed on the applicant’s scientific skills. Furthermore, the applicant’s ability to interact with relevant stakeholders and society will also be considered.
Equal attention will be given to the assessment of pedagogic skills as to the assessment of scientific skills.
Personal qualities and suitability will be assigned high value.
