The Centre for Gender Research was established in 2003 as an interdisciplinary unit within Uppsala University. We are placed within the Disciplinary Domain of the Humanities and Social Sciences, Faculty of Arts. Education and research at the Centre explore various perspectives on sex and gender, and other dimensions of power. The Centre is an excellent milieu for gender research and education, with a strong international and interdisciplinary profile. Close to forty researchers are employed at, or affiliated with, the Centre, and their research spans many research fields and over 20 disciplines. We offer courses and study programmes on undergraduate and advanced level. Ten PhD students are currently enrolled at the Centre. There are currently eight teachers employed here, four of whom are full professors. Read more about our research here: gender.uu.se/forskning

The recruitment of a professor in gender studies with an orientation towards digitality and feminist science and technology studies is part of the strategy to strengthen the area digitality and gender at the Centre for Gender Research. This area is currently expanding with the start of the new research school GENHDI – Gender, Humanities and Digital Cultures in 2023 (funded by the Swedish Research Council and the Centre), as well as projects on AI and Game Design, and the research group Technologization of the Everyday. We are looking for a person who is ready to continue to build and develop this research area in collaboration with colleagues at the Centre, relevant parts of Uppsala University, and national and international networks.

Subject
Gender Studies with a specialization in digitality, digital methods, and feminist science and technology studies.

Duties
As professor, the person hired will have overall responsibility for conducting and developing the research at the Centre and the education at doctoral level in Gender Studies, together with the other professors. This entails developing the research field, planning and leading research projects and conducting original research, actively applying for research funding for both one’s own and colleagues’ research, and developing inter- and cross-disciplinary collaborations and activities across the different faculties and domains of the university, as well as with external parties, nationally and internationally. Responsibilities also involve communication and information about research, and representing the subject in different contexts. Teaching, supervision, and course development at various levels of the educational program are part of this position.

The holder of the position must also be prepared to undertake various types of leadership assignments at the Centre (such as Director of PhD Studies, or Director of the Centre) and at other levels within Uppsala University. Administrative duties are included among the work duties.

Eligibility requirements
Candidates who have obtained a PhD in Gender Studies, or have the equivalent competence, and who have demonstrated substantial research competence as well as pedagogical competence are eligible for the position. It is required that academic competence, pedagogical competence and the candidate’s professional skills are relevant to the duties and subject that are central to the position.

Candidates must have completed training in tertiary-level teaching of no less than ten weeks or obtained equivalent competence. In special circumstances, the training can be carried out during the first two years of their employment. To qualify as a supervisor of doctoral students, the candidate’s pedagogical training must include postgraduate supervisor training.

Documented ability to teach in Swedish and English is required. If there are special circumstances, those who are unable to manage teaching and administrative duties in Swedish are expected to obtain this ability within two years.

The applicant must have the personal qualities required to fit the position. Such personal qualities include an ability to work for the good of the subject and research field in question, and for the good of the entire Centre, a documented ability to collaborate with, and support colleagues, a strong sense of responsibility and the ability to assume leadership positions within the field and in research.

Assessment criteria for candidates who meet the eligibility requirements
In the selection among eligible candidates, special weight will be accorded to academic competence and leadership skills. Significance will also be assigned to pedagogical competence and administrative experience.

Academic competence
Academic competence should be demonstrated through independent research efforts. When assessing academic competence, research quality will be the key criterion. The scope of the research, its depth and breadth, will also be accorded significance. In the assessment of academic competence, special weight will be accorded to appropriate research qualifications within gender and digitality, feminist science and technology studies. Weight will also be accorded to qualifications in feminist and gender studies methodologies, and in digital methods.

The ability to plan, initiate, lead and develop research and education at postgraduate level and the ability to obtain funding for research in competition with others will be accorded great significance.

The demonstrated ability to interact with other disciplines as well as the local community will also be taken into account, as will outreach activities.

Another grounds for assessment for this position is the applicant’s plans for future research. The applicant must therefore submit an account of planned research, which also specifies how planned projects will contribute to strengthening and/or developing the research at the Centre, and at the Faculty of Arts as a whole.

Pedagogical competence refers to educational and teaching qualifications. In addition to academic teaching experience, educational and teaching qualifications from other activities that involve for instance supervision, in-service training or mentoring programmes may be considered. In the assessment of pedagogical competence, the demonstrable quality of that competence will be considered. The scope, breadth and depth of that competence will also be accorded significance. In the assessment of pedagogical competence, special weight will be given to teaching experience and supervision at the doctoral level.

Additionally, the ability to plan, initiate, lead and develop teaching, as well as the ability to link teaching to research in the subject will be accorded significance. The ability to interact on issues pertaining to tertiary education with parties within and outside the university is also considered an indicator of pedagogical competence.

Leadership skills and administrative competence
Great weight will be accorded to leadership skills and administrative competence. Experience of leadership responsibility, demonstrated by, for example, taking responsibility for the departmental environment and/or leading major research programmes or networks is considered meritorious.

Administrative competence may be demonstrated by, for instance, the ability to plan, organize and prioritize work in an efficient and purpose-adapted manner, as well as through the ability to establish and keep to a time plan.

Leadership competence is demonstrated by the ability to lead operations and personnel, make decisions, take responsibility and motivate and provide others with the conditions required to achieve common goals effectively. The ability to coordinate a research group as well as to generate commitment, participation and job satisfaction, and the ability to manage conflicts are further examples of demonstrable competence.

In this recruitment, Uppsala University will primarily consider the candidate who, after a holistic qualitative assessment of skills and competence, is considered to have the best capability to carry out and develop the relevant duties and contribute to the positive development of the Centre and the university.

Additional information
Parental leave, part-time work owing to caring for children, union work, military service or similar activities are considered work experience and should be included in the applicant’s CV.

Application procedure
All qualifications must be documented in a way that makes it possible to assess their quality and scope. The application should contain the following:

  • A letter of application
  • A CV (a brief account of qualifications and previous positions)
  • An account of the candidate’s academic qualifications
  • An account of the candidate’s pedagogical qualifications
  • An account of the candidate’s leadership and administrative qualifications
  • An account of any additional qualifications
  • A list of scholarly publications
  • A list of 10 recent publications or other works that the applicant considers especially relevant to the position
  • Cited publications in full text
  • A reflective text that describes how the applicant would like to develop their academic, pedagogical and other competences, and how they would develop the gender and digitality/technology area, should they be hired as Professor at the Centre
  • Degree certificates and other relevant documents
  • The recruitment group will make use of interviews, trial lectures, and references. Applicants must therefore submit a list of three references who can elucidate the applicant’s professional competence and personal qualities that have a bearing on the post, such as leadership qualities and the ability to cooperate with others.
