The department of clinical sciences, Danderyd hospital (KIDS) was established in its current form 1993. Annually, about 400 students undergo their basic medical training at KI DS. The department conducts clinical research in several different areas. The department has about 90 registered PhD students and annually about 10 defend their dissertations for a doctoral degree in medicine. Approximately 250-300 articles are published annually in international peer-review journals. Extensive commissioned research is also ongoing. The department annually provides several courses for specialist competence in various subjects as well as further education courses for specialists and postgraduate courses.

The department of cardiology is one of Sweden's largest in terms of number of employees and patients. The department has six care wards, three day-care wards, four intervention labs and a large outpatient service. The department of physiology conducts diagnostics at the forefront, has, among other things, extensive echocardiography and arrhythmia diagnostics, cardiac MRI, nuclear medicine and is accredited according to Swedac. The department´s care for arrhythmias has developed strongly in recent years with its own inpatient ward, day-care ward, outpatient care, pacemaker/ICD/CRT implantations, and electrophysiology.


Description of the subject area

The department conducts internationally leading research and has a tradition of innovation and improvement work. The research focuses on clinical research within common heart diseases, and each process area (coronary artery disease, vessel disease, arrhythmia, heart failure, and hemostasis) has its own research group. At the unit, extensive research is conducted in arrhythmia diseases. We previously had a professorship in cardiology with a focus on arrhythmia diseases who retired. This position now needs to be re-filled.


Your mission

The employment is focused on research. The department wants to recruit a professor who will lead and continue to develop the research in cardiology with focus on arrhythmia diseases. You will also be very involved in teaching in the institution's medical education, including specific courses and modules. Your research must focus on arrhythmia diseases, mainly atrial fibrillation. The holder of the position will lead the operations within the USV unit VO Heart & Physiology. The position is intended to be divided as 51% employment at Karolinska Institutet as a professor, and 49% as a specialist competent doctor at VO Heart & Physiology at Danderyd Hospital.


Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for an employment as Professor with focus on research the applicant must have demonstrated good pedagogical expertise, excellent scientific expertise, management, development and collaborative skills and clinical expertise. The holder of the position must have extensive experience in research on arrhythmia diseases, mainly atrial fibrillation. The position will be combined with a position as a specialist trained physician in cardiology at Danderyd hospital and therefore the candidate must have an MD with specialist competence in cardiology, as well as fulfill the National Board of Health and Welfare's requirements for practicing medicine in Sweden.

The applicant must have experience of clinical education within medical programs and supervision of medical students and PhD students.

Since the employment requires collaboration with other hospitals in the county and country, the holder must have documented experience of collaboration between different hospitals and of leading research activities.

Since the position includes patient contact the applicant must, besides English, demonstrate proficiency in Swedish, Norwegian or Danish corresponding to the C1 level according to the common European reference scale (CERS).


Assessment criteria

The Professorship has a focus on research. The assessment will weight qualifications as follows: scientific expertise (3), pedagogical expertise (2), leadership, development, and collaboration expertise (2) and clinical expertise (2).

For employment as Professor at Karolinska Institutet, the eligibility requirements and assessment criteria stated in the Instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure are applied in relation to established profile of employment.

Since the department has a large emergency task, it is also particularly meritorious if the applicant can participate in on-call schedules, including the senior consultant on-call line. It is also meritorious to be part of national and international networks and have experience from leading clinical multicenter studies.

The applicant shall also have completed 10 weeks of courses on teaching in higher education (or have equivalent competence), as indicated in the recommendations of the Association of Swedish Higher Education Institution. If the person appointed for the position is lacking such education at the time of the employment, the appointee must undergo such education during the first two years of employment.

After an overall assessment of the expertise and merits of the applicants in relation to the subject area, Karolinska Institutet will determine which of them has the best potential to contribute to a positive development of the activities at KI.
