The research subject
Mining and Rock Engineering belongs to the Department of Civil, Environmental and Natural Resources Engineering, where research and education in the mining, construction and environmental areas contribute to the development of a long-term sustainable society. 

The Department is searching for a Professor/ Head of Subject who will lead, strengthen and develop mining and rock engineering in education, research and innovation programs to meet the need of mining and mineral sector nationally and globally aligned to the need of society according to UN Sustainable Development Goals. Sweden is a leading mining nation of Europe and home country for many leading and globally known mining and mining equipment manufacturing companies and technology suppliers. The education and Research in Mining and Rock Engineering at Luleå goes back to 1971 when the Mining discipline was relocated from the Royal Institute of Technology (Stockholm).

Initially there were three research subjects: Mining Engineering, Mining Equipment Engineering, and Rock Mechanics, which were merged into one with a new subject: Mining and Mining Technology. In June 2014, the subject was renamed as Mining and Rock Engineering. Currently there are approximately 20 faculty and researchers affiliated with the subject.

The current research focus is in the areas of production technology for mines, rock mechanics and rock engineering. 

The mining engineering at Luleå University is globally well known for its R&D activities and innovative solutions to mining problems and has wide international research network spread all over the world.

The current research activities are funded and sponsored by EU through Framework research program, Strategic Research grants from the Swedish government, joint industry-government initiatives, and projects from the industry etc.

Subject description
Mining- and Rock Engineering comprises mining technology, rock engineering and rock mechanics, including rock mass properties, design of rock excavations and tunneling as well as planning- and production processes related to both mining and civil engineering.

The position as Professor as well as Head of subject is a leadership role. The position requires a strong commitment to teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels, supervision of doctoral students, and publishing in peer-reviewed publications. It requires also developing of a strong research program, obtaining research funding, and commitment to interact with industry and society through various forums and platforms both nationally and globally. Non-Swedish speaking applicants acquire a good knowledge of written and spoken Swedish within 2 years after employment.

The advertised position of Professor / Head of subject is a permanent position.

Persons are qualified for being appointed as Professor if they have demonstrated both scientific and pedagogical proficiency in the subject description. As much attention should be given to the assessment of pedagogical proficiency as to the scientific proficiency. In order to meet the requirements for the position of Professor, the applicant shall:

  • demonstrate academic leadership and ability to conduct and develop research in collaboration with the industry,
  • be prominent within their subject area and demonstrate an original and innovative scientific core in their work while attaining a high international standard, including a total scientific production corresponding to at least three doctoral dissertations,
  • have documented their experience in seeking and being granted external funding for research and development projects,
  • demonstrate documented experience in supervising doctoral students and, unless there are special grounds, should have been the supervisor for at least one doctoral student for up to them receiving their degree. The supervisory period shall include the majority of the doctoral student's studies,
  • demonstrate documented pedagogical proficiency and have clearly developed pedagogic ideas, sound collaboration with the surrounding community in educational contexts for the purpose of contributing to the relevance of the education and preparation for working life,
  • demonstrate research excellence in at least one of the topics in the subject description outlining the integration of the specific field in the wider subject areas.

The following assessment criteria (equally weighted) are applied:

  • scientific proficiency
  • pedagogical proficiency
  • the ability to lead and develop activities

Additional assessment criteria 

  • good international research networks engaged in the mining and rock mechanics science and engineering community
  • the demonstrated ability to obtain external research funding
  • industrial experience
  • experience in assignments and tasks that involve leadership
  • fluent written and spoken English
  • ability to interact internally within the university and with the surrounding community

In addition, other objective criteria, such as the university's gender equality goals, should be taken into account.
