The Department of Health, Education and Technology is looking for a Professor and Head of English and Education, assigned to the Division of Education and Languages in Luleå. The division is responsible for three research subjects in addition to English and Education; Mathematics Education, Swedish and Education, as well as Education. Together, these areas contribute to the academic superstructure of the teacher training programmes.

The subject of English is central to Luleå University of Technology and, among other things, it contributes to ensuring the scientific competence within the teacher training programs. Together with other subjects at the university, English is part of a research school focusing on practise-based education research. Research in the subject of English also includes linguistic studies mainly focused on teaching materials and vocabulary acquisition as well as British and American literature and cultural studies. Courses in English are part of the teacher training programs for compulsory and upper secondary schools. In addition, the subject offers independent courses that can lead to a BA in English. We are looking for a head of subject who will develop both education and research within the subject. Subject Description
English and Education focuses on both the study of English as a subject and the theory and practice of teaching and learning the language. The research emanates from the study of literature and linguistics where issues related to teaching and learning are studied alongside language and literature in a broader sense together with their cultural and social functions.

Duties
As Professor and Head of English and Education, you will have a clearly defined management role, with full responsibility for the development of the subject, including research, research training as well as undergraduate and postgraduate education. In your role you will be managing those who work within the subject in the department, whilst also promoting sustainable development in the area of research and the education environment. This means, amongst other things, that you are expected to attract external funding, working independently and together with others, in order to ensure favourable conditions for future research within the subject group. Your role will include teaching, supervision and examination at first, second, and third cycle levels within the subject. Furthermore, your role will include your own research and development, planning and management of research and research education within the field of study, at national and international levels.

Qualifications
Persons are qualified for being appointed as Professor if they have demonstrated both scientific and pedagogical proficiency. As much attention should be given to the assessment of pedagogical proficiency as to the scientific proficiency. In order to meet the requirements for the position of Professor, the applicants shall:

  • demonstrate academic leadership and ability to conduct and develop research in collaboration with the surrounding community,
  • be prominent within their subject area and demonstrate an original and innovative scientific core in their work while attaining a high international standard, including a total scientific production corresponding to at least three doctoral dissertations,
  • have documented their experience in seeking and being granted external funding for research and development projects,
  • demonstrate documented experience in supervising at third-cycle level and, unless there are special grounds, should have been the principal supervisor for at least one doctoral student for up to them receiving their degree. The supervisory period shall include the majority of the doctoral student's third- cycle studies,
  • demonstrate documented pedagogical proficiency and collaboration with the surrounding community in educational contexts for the purpose of contributing to the relevance of the education and preparation for working life.

Assessment Criteria
The following assessment criteria are applied:

  • scientific proficiency
  • pedagogical proficiency
  • the ability to lead and develop activities additional assessment criteria (equally weighted)
    • the ability to obtain external research and development funding
    • the ability to collaborate with the surrounding community
    • experience in assignments and tasks that involve leadership

In addition, other objective grounds, such as the university's gender equality goals, shall be taken into account.
