Offer Description

Do you want to contribute to improving human health?

We are seeking a curious and highly motivated postdoctoral researcher to join the Calvigioni Research Team at the Department of Neuroscience, Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden.

Division

The research focus of the team is the study of the neurobiology of stress sensitivity, anxiety disorders, stress-induced long-lasting brain states (Calvigioni et al., Nature Neuroscience, 2023) and maladaptive neurodevelopment, with a specific focus on sex differences and critical windows (i.e adolescence). We aim to identify the cellular and molecular state transition in projection-defined and genetically identified sensitive brain network, causal to stress-induced long-lasting disorders, as to the increased sensitivity in women and adolescence.

Our approach, long-term vision and methodology strive to ultimately uncover how single neurons encode stimuli of emotional valence in vivo in the healthy brain and identify the causality between activity modes/genetic cell states and behavioral transition to anxiety disorders.

Duties

The successful candidate will use genetic mouse models, stereotactic surgery and intersectional viral approaches combined with in vivo behaviours, optogenetics/chemogenetics manipulation, molecular biology and neuroanatomical analyses, in adult and developing mice.

The project will also involve dissecting the molecular and functional heterogeneity of relevant brain circuits using state-of-the-art single cell molecular (snSEQ, patchSeq) and functional profiling methods (ex-vivo patch-clamp electrophysiology, in vivo fiber photometry and single neuron calcium imaging).

Previous experience in the study of neuronal circuits in rodent models of stress or development is preferred but not essential. Candidates with experience in anatomical tracing/behavior/electrophysiology and/or imaging techniques will be prioritized. Experience with slice electrophysiology/ in vivo experiments/ neuroendocrinology/ RNA-sequencing and advanced data analysis will be considered and positively evaluated. Candidates with experience in single cell biology in other disciplines and a willingness to study the brain are also welcome.

A curious mind, positive attitude, high motivation and analytical approach to independent problem-solving are essential. The ability to work independently and proficiency in English are necessary.

The earliest start date is Spring 2024 but can be negotiated when the appropriate candidate is found.

Entry requirements

Scholarships for postdoctoral qualification can be established for foreign researchers who place their qualifications in Sweden. The purpose of scholarships for postdoctoral qualification is to promote internationalization and contribute to research qualification after a doctorate or equivalent.
A scholarship for carrying out postdoctoral research can be granted for a maximum of two years within a four year period following the receipt of a doctoral degree or equivalent.
To be eligible for a postdoctoral scholarship, the person must have obtained a doctorate or a foreign degree deemed to be equivalent to a doctorate. Applicants who have not completed a doctorate at the end of the application period may also apply, provided that all requirements for a completed degree are met before the (intended) start date of the post doctoral education.

The head of the department determines whether their previous training and scholarly qualifications correspond to a Swedish doctorate or higher.

Location: Solna

Type of scholarship

The amount is tax free and it is set for twelve months at a time, paid out on a six months basis. In exceptional cases, shorter periods may be acceptable.

Application process

An application must contain the following documents in English or Swedish:

  • A complete curriculum vitae, including date of the thesis defence, title of the thesis, previous academic positions, academic title, current position, academic distinctions, and committee work
  • A complete list of publications
  • A cover letter (describing goals and motivation)
  • A summary of current work (no more than one page)
  • At least 2 letters of reference (with contact details of refence)

The application is to be submitted on the Varbi recruitment system.
