At the Department of Oncology-Pathology basic, translational and clinical research and educational activities related to cancer is carried out. Approximately 300 people from over 40 nations are currently working at the department. 37 research groups with various cancer research profiles are involved and we have around 120 PhD students. The Department of Oncology-Pathology is responsible for undergraduate courses in Pathology, Oncology and Forensic Medicine for medical students, as well as for Tumor biology courses for biomedicine students and Pathology courses for opticians.

Research group
The group of Pär Nordlund at the Department of Oncology and Pathology works on different aspects of molecular and cellular cancer research. Current work in the group is focused on understanding the efficacy and resistance mechanism for a range of different cancer drugs. The group also works on the generation of small molecule and protein based experimental therapeutics to probe novel mechanisms for cancer therapy. The Nordlund group has developed the Cellular Thermal Shift Assay (CETSA) – an innovative biophysical technique which is the first broadly applicable method for direct studies of drug target protein interactions in intact cells and tissues (Martinez Molina, Science 2013, 41:84). CETSA is also a novel, potentially transformative technique, for studies of the biochemistry of the cell at the proteome level, including protein-protein, protein-metabolite and protein-nucleic acid interactions (Martinez Molina & Nordlund, Ann Rev Pharm Toxic 201656:141, Savitski, Science 2014 346;6205). CETSA derived biomarkers have potentials to be valuable tools during cancer therapy. The group has two Thermo Fisher Q Exective Orbitrap instruments dedicated to the CETSA applications.

The successful applicant will work in a dynamic team, exploring proteome wide CETSA for applications in studies of mechanisms of drug action and resistance development and for discovery of diagnostic markers of therapeutic effect. The applicant will also help with MS training and supervision within the group. External collaboration with other research groups, including pharmaceutical companies, will be important in the project.

The successful candidate should have a background in mass-spectrometry based proteomics working with mammalian cell systems and good knowledge of molecular biology and protein chemistry. A background in cancer research is a plus as well as previous industrial experience. We are looking for someone very enthusiastic about novel techniques and translational science.

The applicant is eligible for a position as Postdoctoral Researcher if he or she has obtained a PhD no more than seven years before the last date of employment as postdoc.

We expect the candidate to be able to work highly independent as well as having very good work ethics and collaboration skills. Proficiency in English (oral and written) is a requirement.

Entry requirements
Scholarships for carrying out postdoctoral research may be granted to persons living in other countries who come to Sweden with the intention of only staying in Sweden for all or part of their postdoctoral education at KI. Persons who are resident in Sweden and/or have carried out all or part of their academic education at KI or some other educational institution in Sweden cannot be considered for scholarships from KI. The head of the department determines whether their previous training and scholarly qualifications correspond to a Swedish PhD or higher.

Type of scholarship
A scholarship for carrying out postdoctoral research can be granted for a maximum of two years within a four year period following the receipt of a doctoral degree or equivalent. This educational scholarship is tax-exempt.

The amount is set for twelve months at a time and is paid out on a monthly basis. There is a good chance of extension.
