Uppsala University is a comprehensive research-intensive university with a strong international standing. Our ultimate goal is to conduct education and research of the highest quality and relevance to make a long-term difference in society. Our most important assets are all the individuals whose curiosity and dedication make Uppsala University one of Sweden’s most exciting workplaces. Uppsala University has over 54,000 students, more than 7,500 employees and a turnover of around SEK 8 billion.
The Department of Chemistry - Ångström conducts research and education in the chemistry field. The department has more than 250 employees and has a turnover of 250 million SEK. At the department's six programs, we conduct very successful research of a high international standard. We have a large number of externally funded research projects, often with international cooperation and we see continued good growth in our subject area. The department has education assignments in engineering programs and master's programs. More information is available on our website .
Project description
The goal of the project is to extend the fundamental understanding of the mechanisms governing the ion transport in Li-ion battery electrolyte materials. The research will mainly focus on the development of new, and computationally efficient, strategies for multi-scale modelling that enable systematic studies of hypothetical materials on a large scale. The scientific outcome is expected to provide guidelines to identify and optimize such materials and to form the basis for the development of future-generations of rechargeable batteries. The work will be carried out within the Computational Materials Chemistry group (CMC – http://www.teoroo.kemi.uu.se/ ) and in close collaboration with experimental activities at the Ångström Advanced Battery Centre (ÅABC – https://kemi.uu.se/angstrom/research/structural-chemistry/aabc ), which are both parts of the structural chemistry program at Uppsala University.
Work duties
The main duties involved in a postdoctoral position is to conduct research. Teaching may also be included, but up to no more than 20% of working hours. The main focus of the current research project is modelling of battery materials where we will develop physical models for multi-scale modelling purposes and use a broad spectrum of advanced simulation techniques such as electron structure calculations and molecular dynamics for detailed studies of the transport processes. The research work also involves development and use of data analysis and data handling strategies, such as machine-learning, as well as a close collaboration with experimentalists within ÅABC. The position is co-financed by the BIG-MAP project (http://www.big-map.eu) which is a consortium of 34 academic and industrial partner groups funded by the European Commission, as well as by the Swedish Research Council (VR).
Requirements
For employment as postdoc, the applicant should have a PhD exam or an international equivalent within the field of Chemistry, Physics, Materials Science or other for the position relevant fields, within a maximum of three (3) years before the final application date. During certain circumstances, an earlier PhD can be acceptable. Certain circumstances include leave due to illness, maternity leave, in trade unions, etc.
The assessment of applications is based primarily on the applicant's ability to conduct independent research based on scientific skill. Greater importance will be attached to the quality of individual scientific work, than to the number of publications. The applicant is expected to have a very good knowledge of written and spoken English.
A solid background in a range of computational chemistry methods targeting several different length and time scales is required
Desirable qualifications
Programming skills and experience with machine learning is meriting,
