Postdoctoral Researcher in translational epidemiology

Updated: 15 days ago

Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research?

The Department of Medical Epidemiology and Biostatistics (MEB) conducts research in epidemiology and biostatistics across a broad range of areas within biomedical science. The department is among the largest of its type in Europe and has especially strong research profiles in psychiatric, cancer, reproductive, pediatric, pharmaco, genetic, and geriatric epidemiology, eating disorders, precision medicine, and biostatistics.

Part of the success of our department is due to our collaborative spirit where one factor is that researchers at the Department share and co-finance common resources (e.g., IT and an applied biostatistics group). The department is situated at campus Solna. Further information can be found at http://ki.se/en/meb

The Department has about 280 researchers, doctoral students, statisticians, programmers, data collectors, database administrators and administrative staff. The department is also host to KI Biobank and is responsible for the Swedish Twin Registry. The organization has the critical resources and the infrastructure needed (servers/IT systems, database managers, and statisticians) to perform significant and innovative large-scale register studies.

The research group is an international team of researchers from Karolinska Institutet and universities in Hong Kong. Our team uses large-scale population cohort to study the etiology of neurological disorders. We are interested in translational epidemiology, precision genome editing, novel gene delivery and precision medicine. We take multidisciplinary approaches combining medical epidemiology and biotechnologies and aim to identify and treat genetic abnormalities in selected neurological disorders.

Your mission

Efficient and specific delivery of gene editing drugs to target cells and tissues remains a challenge that hinders clinical translation of genetic findings into new treatment for genetic disorders such as Alzheimer's diseases. To date, there are no effective disease-modifying treatments for AD. CRISPR-mediated gene therapy is being actively explored for the treatment of diseases rooted in altered DNA bases. This project aims to develop advanced genome editing reagent delivery approaches to targeted cells and tissues. It involves multidisciplinary approaches, including both data analysis at Karolinska Institutet and lab work at City University of Hong Kong.

This is a two-year position with a possible extension.

Your profile

To be eligible for employment as a postdoctor a doctoral degree or a foreign degree deemed to be equivalent to a doctoral degree is required. This eligibility requirement must be fulfilled at the latest at the time of the employment decision. It is considered as an advantage if you have completed your doctoral degree within the last three years, if there are special reasons, your degree may have been completed earlier.

The successful applicant is expected to have:

1) PhD degree in biology, biotechnology, medicine, or related fields.

2) Knowledge in medical genetics and skills in general molecular cloning techniques, as evident by first-author publications in the relevant field.

3) Previous experience in CRISPR gene editing and in vivo delivery of gene editing reagents are highly valued.

4) Highly motivated and willing to take an active role in the project, be able to work independently but also be willing to contribute to the team and possess excellent collaborative skills.

5) Good skills in English, both written and spoken.
