The Department of Translational Medicine is one of the six departments at the Faculty of Medicine, Lund University. We conduct basic science in a laboratory setting, point-of-care and clinical research as well as carry out epidemiological studies.

About the research group
The research group Medical Radiation Physics, Malmö, conducts research within the interdisciplinary subject of medical radiation physics. The research group is led by Professor Lars E Olsson. One of the focal projects is MRI in radiation therapy. The group works at Skåne's Oncology Clinic and has contributed to Lund being an international leading center for integrating MRI into radiotherapy. The duties are mainly connected to the MR camera located at Radiation oncology department and thereby the position is located in Lund. We are now looking for a Postdoctoral researcher in Medical radiation physics. The employment is a full-time, fixed-term position, limited to 2 years (with a possible extension of one year). Preliminary starting date is October 1, 2023 or according to agreement.

Work duties
The task is to develop new MRI methods to characterize tumors before and during radiotherapy and to apply the methods in clinical studies. It is mainly advanced MRI diffusion techniques that will be developed to study tissue microstructure and heterogeneity, but other functional MRI-methods may also be of interest. Quantitative imaging parameters are extracted from the images, tested and validated as clinical imaging biomarkers. The work is carried out in a multidisciplinary team which besides physicists consist of biologists, medical doctors and other researchers. The position may also include supervision of students at MSc or PhD level, teaching and participating in the joint work to develop the activities of the research group.

Qualifications and basis for assessment
Appointment to a post-doctoral position requires that the applicant has a PhD, or an international degree deemed equivalent to a PhD, within the subject of the position. This eligibility requirement needs to be met no later than the time when the employment decision is made, and evidence that this requirement is met needs to have been sent in by this time at the latest. Candidates should have completed their PhD degree no more than three (3) years before the last date for applications. Under special circumstances, the doctoral degree can have been completed earlier. These circumstances refer to leave due to illness, parental leave, clinical work, positions of trust within trade union organizations or other similar circumstances.

At Lund University, employment as a postdoctoral researcher provides opportunities for scientific and pedagogical merit. There is mainly room for merit in research, but also for certain higher education pedagogical training. Teaching may be included in the tasks. For the employment as a postdoctoral research, scientific ability will primarily be taken into account.

The following are also required for the position:

  • PhD degree in medical radiation physics or another relevant field to MRI
  • Very good knowledge in MRI-physics
  • Excellent skills in English speech and writing.

Special emphasis will be placed on certain personal qualities. we are looking for you who have a good ability to cooperate and initiative. The following qualifications are considered to be a merit:

  • Experience of quantitative MRI-methods, advanced image analysis, pulse programming and other programming (e.g. Matlab, Pyhon)
  • Experience of supervising students at different levels
  • Licence to practice medical physics.

Terms of employment
This is a full-time employment limited to 2 years, with the possibility of an extension of up to one year. Preliminary start date is 2023-10-01 or as agreed. The period of employment is determined in accordance with the agreement “Avtal om tidsbegränsad anställning som postdoktor” (“Agreement on fixed-term employment as a post-doctoral researcher”) between SACO-S, OFR/S and SEKO, dated November 19, 2021.
