Offer Description
Description of the workplace
The department has a stimulating and international environment consisting of PhD students, postdocs and teachers coming from all corners of the world. Research and teaching are conducted in an open and progressive atmosphere with challenges and cooperation both within academia and with industry, with national and international networks.
Project
Do you want to be part of a research environment committed to addressing control challenges essential for a future sustainable society? Then these postdoctoral positions are aimed for you!
We are looking for candidates for the following, strongly related, research projects:
1. Learning in Networks: Structure, Dynamics and Control. In this project, which is funded by the Wallenberg AI, Autonomous Systems and Software Program (WASP) and is a collaboration between KTH, Uppsala Univ. and Lund Univ., we develop mathematical tools for designing algorithms that learn the structure, the dynamics and the control of large-scale networks. In Lund, we focus particularly on decentralized control and reinforcement learning, with the objective of achieving scalable and robust controllers for large-scale interconnected systems. The project is mathematically oriented and includes aspects of computational methods for systems and control. Applications include energy systems, telecommunications and infrastructure.
Within the strongly connected project Scalable Control of Interconnected Systems, funded by an ERC Advanced Grant, there is also room to employ a postdoc candidate with a strong background in control for energy networks specifically, to explore fundamental questions regarding scalable control for energy systems.
2. Dynamics of complex networks and socioeconomic systems
In this project, we study interactions and control decisions in large networks of interconnected subsystems or individuals, in order to describe behaviors and dynamics in complex technical, social, or socioeconomic systems. Here, at the intersection of systems theory and network science, we address cross-disciplinary challenges within, for example, energy, epidemics, political science, and economics. This cross-disciplinary project is theoretically oriented, with basis in methods from mathematics, physics, controls and systems theory.
Subject description
Automatic Control is an exciting and broad subject, covering both deep mathematics and hands-on engineering. Historically it has been instrumental in many areas, from the early development of telecommunications to the space race. Today, driven by the need to engineer ever larger systems, Automatic Control has never been more relevant.
Work duties
The main duties involved in a post-doctoral position is to conduct research within the respective project. The candidate is also expected to contribute to the general scientific discussion at the department, to the teaching of PhD level courses. Teaching may take up to no more than 20% of working hours. Depending on the research project, the candidate may also be expected to initiate and maintain inter-departmental or industrial collaborations, and to assist in supervising students on MSc and PhD levels. The position includes the opportunity for three weeks of training in higher education teaching and learning. The purpose of the position is to develop the independence as a researcher and to create the opportunity of further development. Travels may be included in the work duties.
Qualification requirements
Appointment to a post-doctoral position requires that the applicant has a PhD, or an international degree deemed equivalent to a PhD, within the subject of the position. The certificate proving the qualification requirement is met, must be received before the employment decision is made. Priority will be given to candidates who have graduated no more than three years ago before the last day for application. Under special circumstances, the doctoral degree can have been completed earlier.
Additional requirements
- Very good oral and written proficiency in English.
- Independence
- Drive
- Flexibility and openness
- Ability to collaborate and network with colleagues both within and outside academia
- Good communication skills
Assessment criteria
This is a career development position primarily focused on research. The position is intended as an initial step in a career, and the assessment of the applicants will primarily be based on their research qualifications and potential as researchers. Particular emphasis will be given to academic skills within the subject.
For appointments to a post-doctoral position, the following shall form the assessment criteria:
- A good ability to develop and conduct high quality research.
- Teaching skills.
Other qualifications:
- The working languages are English and Swedish. Interest in learning Swedish during the employment in Lund is desirable.
Consideration will also be given to how the applicant’s experience and skills complement and strengthen ongoing research within the department, and how they stand to contribute to its future development.
