The Institute for Russian and Eurasian Studies (IRES) is part of the Faculty of Social Sciences at Uppsala University and has an integrated multi-disciplinary long-term research program with an in-depth focus on recent developments in Russia, and in the post-Soviet sphere.

Russian and Eurasian Studies has been an established academic discipline at Uppsala University for almost fifty years. We study processes of social, political and economic transformation in Russia and the post-soviet area. But also international and regional cooperation, the EU’s and NATO’s eastward enlargement, energy policy, cyber-security, terrorism and ethnic conflicts and types of political regime and democratization. Of equal interest are language issues, language policy, minority politics and diaspora affairs, and issues related to transnational minorities, historical memory, gender and ethnicity from a historical, cultural, political and social perspective. Analytically, our research spans across multiple disciplines, such as the political science, peace and conflict research, international studies, cultural geography and demography, information and media, sociology, anthropology, history and linguistics.

IRES is home to the editorial teams of the Journal of Baltic Studies and Uppsala Yearbook of Eurasian Studies. The institute also has a well-established visiting scholars program that provides the opportunity to spend a longer or shorter period of time at the Institute. Over the years, over 80 visiting scholars from around the globe have carried out research at the Institute.

Duties
Conducting research and participating in planning and leading research projects, including the submission of applications for research funding. Assisting the director of research in organizing and chairing research seminars. Assisting the director of research in research administration. Some teaching at the master level might also be included.

As the department aspires to strengthen its research in Russian and Eurasian studies, with its focus on empirical investigations of the contemporary Russia and the post-Soviet area, particular weight will be placed on qualifications in one of the following research areas:

Processes of social, political and/or economic transformation

Political regimes and democratization.

Requirements
PhD degree in Social Science within the field of Russian and Eurasian Studies, or a foreign degree equivalent to a PhD degree in Social Science within the field of Russian and Eurasian Studies. The degree needs to be obtained by the time of the decision of employment. Those who have obtained a PhD degree three years prior to the application deadline are primarily considered for the employment. The starting point of the three-year frame period is the application deadline. Due to special circumstances, the degree may have been obtained earlier. The three-year period can be extended due to circumstances such as sick leave, parental leave, duties in labour unions, etc.

We are seeking candidates with a documented research background in Russian or other post-Soviet society. Candidates should have a good overview of social sciences and master the main methodologies used in these areas of research. Good knowledge of Russian/Eurasian society is required. Proficiency in Russian and/or some other official language in the post-Soviet space is a requirement. Excellent command of written and spoken English is also a requirement for this postdoc position.

About the employment
