Postdoctoral position in register-based cardiovascular research

Updated: about 1 year ago
Deadline: The position may have been removed or expired!

Umeå University is one of Sweden’s largest higher education institutions with over 37 000 students and about 4 700 employees. The University offers a diversity of high-quality education and world-leading research in several fields. And the groundbreaking discovery of the CRISPR-Cas9 gene-editing tool, which was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry, was made here. At Umeå University, everything is close. Our cohesive campuses make it easy to meet, work together and exchange knowledge, which promotes a dynamic and open culture.

The ongoing societal transformation and large green investments in northern Sweden create enormous opportunities and complex challenges. For Umeå University, conducting research about – and in the middle of – a society in transition is what it is all about. But also about delivering education to enable regions to expand quickly and sustainably. This is simply where the future is built.

There is now an opportunity to apply for a two-year full-time postdoctoral position in register-based cardiovascular research at Umeå University. The position will mainly involve work with already linked registers and the focus will be on data analysis and writing of scientific articles.

Description of the project
Cardiovascular disease is the most common cause of death in Sweden and worldwide today. Our research group investigates various risk factors for cardiovascular disease. By linking national registers and databases with Västerbotten's unique population surveys, we can follow risk factor patterns within  individuals for more than half a century. We can thus study temporal relationships between different risk factors, and analyze how these affect the risk of cardiovascular disease in different phases of life. We particularly focus on the diagnosis, prognosis and treatment of high blood pressure, as well as diseases of the aorta.

Work responsibilities
As a postdoctoral fellow, you will work with all parts of the research project, including applications for and updating of data, data processing, study design, statistical analysis, interpretation of results, writing of scientific articles and presentation at national and international congresses. The position will also include supervision of doctoral students in epidemiological/statistical methods. There will be room to propose own analyzes and design own projects within the framework of existing research infrastructure.

Eligibility
A person who has been awarded a doctorate or a foreign qualification deemed to be the equivalent of a doctorate in medicine, cardiology, epidemiology or other subjects deemed relevant for the research project is eligible for appointment as postdoctoral researcher. This eligibility requirement must be met no later than the time at which the appointment decision is made.

The applicant must have experience from working with large databases, including longitudinal data. Good knowledge of statistical software, such as STATA, SAS or R, is a prerequisite. Applicants must also have a good ability to communicate research in speech and writing and be able to independently write scientific articles in English.

Additional useful qualifications
Since appointment as a postdoctoral researcher is a career-development position for junior researchers, we are primarily interested in applicants who completed their doctoral degree no more than three years before the application deadline. If there are special reasons, an applicant who has completed their degree earlier than that may be considered. Special reasons include absence due to illness, parental leave, clinical practice, appointments of trust for a trade union organisation or other similar circumstances, and for relevant duties/assignments within the subject area.

Desired qualifications:

  • Knowledge of and experience in cardiovascular medicine
  • Knowledge of and experience in research based on Nordic registers
  • Experience with statistical methods relevant to registry-based research, such as survival analysis, mediation analysis or methods for causal inference
  • Ability to design scientific studies/subprojects yourself
  • Further research activity after PhD defense
