Postdoctoral position in Molecular Systems Biology

Updated: about 1 month ago
Deadline: 07 Nov 2023

Published: 2023-09-06

The Department of Cell and Molecular Biologyis organized into seven research programmes which all focus on different areas of cell and molecular biology: Computational Biology and Bioinformatics, Microbiology and Immunology, Molecular Biology, Molecular Biophysics, Molecular Evolution, Molecular Systems Biology and Structural Biology. The scientific basis of what we do lies in biology, but our research overlaps with other areas such as medicine, computer science, mathematics, chemistry, engineering sciences and physics. In total, we are over 200 staff and ~60 Ph.D. students. Please read more about the department’s work at https://icm.uu.se .

The position is with Johan Elf's research group at the program for Molecular Systems Biology. The group works across the boundaries of traditional research fields to investigate life at the molecular level. We build physical models of central biological processes and develop different experimental techniques to test these models in living cells.

Duties
As a postdoctoral fellow in molecular systems biology, you will develop a new method for mapping basic processes in bacteria using DNA microscopy (Weinstein et al. Cell 2019). With this method, intracellular structures can be visualized through hybridization with unique nucleotide probes, concatenation, sequencing, and finally image reconstruction based on molecular proximity. The imaging is optics-free but analytically demanding; the project thus includes some computational science and possibly AI-based analysis methods. The fellowship is a full-time research position with teaching opportunities if you are interested. You are expected to run your project independently and you have the freedom to develop your ideas within the overall scope of the research plan. We offer a stimulating interdisciplinary environment where you will work closely with experts in microbiology, biophysics, microscopy, image analysis, and molecular biology.

Requirements
To qualify for an employment as a postdoctor you must have a PhD degree or a foreign degree equivalent to a PhD degree in genomics, molecular biology, physics, bioinformatics, or another relevant discipline. Those who have obtained a PhD degree three years prior to the application deadline are primarily considered for the employment. The starting point of the three-year frame period is the application deadline. Due to special circumstances, the degree may have been obtained earlier. The three-year period can be extended due to circumstances such as sick leave, parental leave, duties in labour unions, etc. Furthermore, you must have good knowledge and experience of large-scale sequencing, bioinformatics, programming, and laboratory molecular genetics and molecular biology work. You must have a creative and self-motivated personality and an interest in basic research and method development. As the project requires collaboration with other researchers within and outside the group, you should have good social skills and excellent ability to communicate in English.

Additional qualifications
Experience with AI-based analysis methods is advantageous.

The application should include:

  • CV (max 2 pages, A4)
  • Cover letter (max 1 page, A4)
  • List of publications
  • Contact information for at least three academic reference persons

About the employment
The employment is a temporary position of two years according to central collective agreement. Scope of employment 100 %. Starting date January 1, 2024 or as agreed. Placement: Uppsala
