Postdoctoral position in focus on single-cell and spatial transcriptomics and epigenomics (scholarship)

Updated: 2 months ago

Do you want to contribute to improving human health?

The position is based at unit of Molecular Neurobiology (MBB), at Karolinska Institutet, Stockholm, Sweden.

The Castelo-Branco research group is interested in the molecular mechanisms defining the epigenetic state of cells of the oligodendrocyte lineage. We are focused on how interplay between transcription factors, non-coding RNAs and chromatin modifying enzymes contribute to the transition between states within the oligodendrocyte lineage, with the aim to design epigenetic based-therapies to induce regeneration (remyelination) in demyelinating diseases, such as multiple sclerosis. Our research group has performed single cell omics and identified several cell states within the oligodendrocyte lineage in development and disease (Science 2016, Dev Cell 2018, Nature Medicine 2018, Nature 2019, Nature Biotechnology 2021, Neuron 20222 among others). Our findings suggest that oligodendrocyte lineage cells might present other functional properties than previously thought.

We have ongoing several projects with single-cell omics and more recently in spatial transcriptomics and epigenomics, and the successful candidate will be actively working in specific projects. The successful candidate will be integrated in a multidisciplinary team comprising computational, molecular and cellular biologists.

What do we offer?

A creative and inspiring environment full of expertise and curiosity. Our research group is based at the Department of Medical Biochemistry and Biophysics (MBB), at the Karolinska Institutet (KI), Stockholm, Sweden, within the Unit of Molecular Neurobiology. The Unit of Molecular Neurobiology has presently seven research groups, focused on several aspects of development, stem cell biology, neuroscience and cancer, providing a unique critical mass and expertize, and vibrant scientific environment. Karolinska Institutet is one of the world's leading medical universities. Our vision is to pursue the development of knowledge about life and to promote a better health for all. At Karolinska Institutet, we conduct successful medical research and hold the largest range of medical education in Sweden. Karolinska Institutet collaborates with prominent universities from all around the world, which ensures opportunities for international exchanges. Employees also have access to our modern gym for free and receive reimbursements for medical care.

Skills and personal qualities

We are looking for highly motivated, driven, inquisitive, enthusiastic person interested in our area of research, and ready to explore new avenues in science. The candidate should have a collaborative approach to research, working productively in a team and contributing to a good social environment in the laboratory. The applicant must have a PhD degree, and either strong experience in single-cell omics and/or transcriptomics/epigenomics, preferably within neuroscience.

Entry requirements

Scholarships for postdoctoral qualification can be established for foreign researchers who place their qualifications in Sweden. The purpose of scholarships for postdoctoral qualification is to promote internationalization and contribute to research qualification after a doctorate or equivalent.
A scholarship for carrying out postdoctoral research can be granted for a maximum of two years within a four year period following the receipt of a doctoral degree or equivalent.
To be eligible for a postdoctoral scholarship, the person must have obtained a doctorate or a foreign degree deemed to be equivalent to a doctorate. Applicants who have not completed a doctorate at the end of the application period may also apply, provided that all requirements for a completed degree are met before the (intended) start date of the post doctoral education.

The head of the department determines whether their previous training and scholarly qualifications correspond to a Swedish doctorate or higher.

Location: Solna

Type of scholarship

The amount is tax free and it is set for twelve months at a time, paid out on a six months basis. In exceptional cases, shorter periods may be acceptable.

Application process

An application must contain the following documents in English or Swedish:

  • A complete curriculum vitae, including date of PhD defense, title of the thesis, previous academic positions, academic title, current position, academic distinctions, and committee work (nor more than 2 pages)
  • A selected list of publications (no more than 1 page)
  • A personal letter highlighting previous scientific accomplishments, technical expertize and why the candidate is interested in joining the host lab (no more than one page)

The application is to be submitted on the Varbi recruitment system.
