Offer Description

Description of the workplace
The Division of Combustion Physics is well-established and internationally recognized for excellence in the measurement and development of combustion applications related to ground and aerospace combustion engines and energy production. The Department of Physics conducts a wide array of research, together with other departments within the Faculty of Engineering. Our research facility was built in 2001 and currently supports the work of around 50 researchers. Combustion Physics

Subject description
The proposed research work consists in determining the size, velocity and temperature of droplets generated by atomizing spray systems. This is performed by means of advanced imaging and laser-based diagnostic techniques. Two types of flows will be investigated:

1) Spray drying injector running at ambient conditions using water
2) Spray drying injectors running at high temperature using various mixed liquids

Work duties
The main duties involved in a post-doctoral position is to conduct research. Teaching may also be included, but up to no more than 20% of working hours. The position includes the opportunity for three weeks of training in higher education teaching and learning. The purpose of the position is to develop the independence as a researcher and to create the opportunity of further development.

In this research work the operating conditions will focus on spray drying applications that will be defined by Tetra Pak. The measurements of droplet size (using the LIF/Mie technique) and temperature (using two-color LIF thermometry) will be based on a combination with the use of Structured Laser Illumination Planar Imaging (SLIPI). The measurement of liquid dynamics will be related to a combination of high-speed imaging based of back-scattering and back-LIF detection.
Both macroscopic imaging (viewed areas in the order of ~12 cm for quantitative measurements) and microscopic imaging (viewed areas in the order of ~5 mm for dynamics imaging) will be used during this project.

The position includes the opportunity for three weeks of training in higher education teaching and learning. The purpose of the position is to develop the independence as a researcher and to create the opportunity of further development.

Detailed description of the work duties, such as:

  • Research within the subject area
  • Collaboration with the Tetra Pak industry
  • Guidance and co-supervision of doctoral students
  • Administration related to the work duties listed above

Qualification requirements
Appointment to a post-doctoral position requires that the applicant has a PhD, or an international degree deemed equivalent to a PhD, within the subject of the position. The certificate proving the qualification requirement is met, must be received before the employment decision is made. Priority will be given to candidates who have graduated no more than three years ago before the last day for application. Under special circumstances, the doctoral degree can have been completed earlier.

Additional requirements:

  • Very good oral and written proficiency in English.
  • A PhD within the subject of the position.

Extensive knowledge on temperature measurements and sizing of particles/droplets using laser based diagnostics. Ability to independently design and carry out experimental research projects related to two-phase flow systems.

  • A broad competence profile and knowledge in heat transfer and fluid mechanics is important for this project.
  • A good ability to develop and conduct high quality research.

Assessment criteria
This is a career development position primarily focused on research. The position is intended as an initial step in a career, and the assessment of the applicants will primarily be based on their research qualifications and potential as researchers. Particular emphasis will be placed on research skills within the subject.

For appointments to a post-doctoral position, the following shall form the assessment criteria:

  • A good ability to develop and conduct high quality research.
  • Teaching skills.

Other qualifications:

  • Extensive experience on temperature measurements involving temperature sensitive dyes.
  • Extensive experience on laser diagnostic techniques for droplet sizing.
  • Experience in laboratory work related to two-phase flows.
  • Strong skills in programming and image analysis.
  • Journal publications in the field.

Consideration will also be given to how the applicant’s experience and skills complement and strengthen ongoing research within the department, and how they stand to contribute to its future development.
