Offer Description
Description of the workplace
Lund University's Department of Energy Sciences is a leading center for research in energy, fluid mechanics, and sustainability.
The Division of Fluid Mechanics at Lund University's Department of Energy Sciences is a distinguished and dynamic research environment, recognized for its cutting-edge contributions to the field of fluid mechanics, particularly in the areas of energy systems and sustainable technologies. Our division prides itself on a collaborative and innovative research culture, where interdisciplinary approaches are actively pursued.
At our division, you will find a diverse team of experts specializing in various aspects of fluid dynamics, heat transfer, and multi-physics problems, all working towards developing sustainable solutions for contemporary challenges. Our facilities are equipped with state-of-the-art computational resources, enabling advanced simulations and modeling. Moreover, we actively engage in collaborations with other leading experts on laser diagnostics, automatic control, heat transfer and life cycle assessment, both nationally and internationally, promoting a network of expertise and innovation.
This position offers a unique chance to be part of a vibrant community that is at the forefront of research in fluid mechanics and its applications in sustainable energy and environmental solutions.
Subject description
This postdoctoral position is centered on the advanced study of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) as applied to Hydrogen Internal Combustion Engines. The primary research focus is on the mathematical and computational modeling of hydrogen fuel dynamics in internal combustion engines, aiming to innovate and optimize engine design for zero carbon emissions. This involves a detailed exploration of the fluid mechanics and thermodynamics specific to hydrogen combustion processes, including turbulence modeling, combustion kinetics, and heat transfer in engine environments.
Project description
The successful candidate will contribute to a crucial area of research that supports the transition to sustainable, clean energy in heavy-duty transportation, aligning with global environmental goals. This specialized subject area requires a blend of theoretical knowledge and practical computational skills, positioning it at the forefront of sustainable energy research.
Work duties
The main duties involved in a post-doctoral position is to conduct research. Teaching may also be included, but up to no more than 20% of working hours. The position includes the opportunity for three weeks of training in higher education teaching and learning. The purpose of the position is to develop the independence as a researcher and to create the opportunity of further development.
In this postdoctoral position, you will have the unique opportunity to shape the future of sustainable heavy-duty transportation through your expertise in Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD).
Detailed description of the work duties, such as:
- Developing Advanced CFD Models: You will be particularly responsible for creating and refining computational models that simulate hydrogen combustion in internal combustion engines.
- Data Analysis and Interpretation: You will analyze simulation outcomes and compare them with experimental data provided by our industry partners.
- Research Publication and Dissemination: Publishing your findings in reputable scientific journals and presenting at conferences will be a key part of your role.
- Collaborative Projects: Engaging with interdisciplinary teams within and outside the university will be crucial. You will collaborate on grant applications and research proposals, extending the impact of your work.
- Teaching and Supervision: While the focus is on research, you will also have the chance to teach and supervise student projects, up to 20% of your working hours.
- Actively seeking external research funding: Collaborate in seeking external research funding for mutual benefit.
Special circumstances of this position may include travel to national and international conferences and workshops, offering you the opportunity to network and collaborate with leading experts in the field. You may also engage in visits to our industry partners for data collection and discussions.
Qualification requirements
Appointment to a post-doctoral position requires that the applicant has a PhD, or an international degree deemed equivalent to a PhD, within the subject of the position. The certificate proving the qualification requirement is met, must be received before the employment decision is made. Priority will be given to candidates who have graduated no more than three years ago before the last day for application. Under special circumstances, the doctoral degree can have been completed earlier.
Additional requirements:
- PhD, or an international degree deemed equivalent to a PhD, in Mechanical Engineering, Fluid Mechanics, or a closely related field, with a focus on Computational Fluid Dynamics or combustion engines.
- Possess very good oral and written proficiency in English.
- Have demonstrable experience in CFD simulation, particularly related to combustion processes.
- Exhibit strong analytical skills and a proven ability to conduct independent research.
- Have a track record of published research in relevant scientific journals.
- Collaborative skills.
Assessment criteria
This is a career development position primarily focused on research. The position is intended as an initial step in a career, and the assessment of the applicants will primarily be based on their research qualifications and potential as researchers. Particular emphasis will be placed on research skills within the subject.
For appointments to a post-doctoral position, the following shall form the assessment criteria:
- A good ability to develop and conduct high quality research.
- Teaching skills.
Other qualifications:
- Expertise in advanced Computational Fluid Dynamics, specifically in the context of hydrogen combustion or similar areas, will be highly valued.
- Having experience with multi-phase flow modeling in CFD is an asset.
- Experience in collaborating with industry partners or in interdisciplinary research projects will be considered favorably.
- Skills in programming languages such as Python, MATLAB, or similar, used in scientific computing, are advantageous.
- Demonstrated ability to integrate and analyze experimental data within computational models.
- Strong experience of collaboration in research, evidenced by joint publications, project work, or collaborative grants.
- Capacity to work effectively in an interdisciplinary team, contributing positively to team dynamics and project development.
- Organizational skills, including the ability to manage time effectively and handle multiple priorities.
Consideration will also be given to how the applicant’s experience and skills complement and strengthen ongoing research within the department, and how they stand to contribute to its future development.
