The Unit of Chemical Ecology, Department of Plant Protection Biology, Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, Alnarp, consists of approximately 40 researchers and students who study the interaction between insects and their environment, with a focus on odors and tastants. The research includes both basic and applied aspects, the last with a goal to develop new tools to be used in pest control. The group has an extensive network of collaborators in Sweden, Europe and the rest of the world.

Duties:

Within this group we are recruiting a postdoc for research in integrated pest management. The focus lays on comparative olfactory research on the sense of smell of pests of fruits, onion, cabbage, beets, tomato, and carrots. The aim is to better understand how the sense of smell determines the preference of a species and find new ways to develop methods and techniques to control pests of these crops that can be used by end-users. The research involves both research in the laboratory, as well as in the field in Sweden and in Africa (Tanzania / Kenya). The latter is in collaboration with the University of Dar es Salaam and icipe.


Qualifications:

The ideal candidate should be an expert in insect chemical ecology, have extensive qualifications and experience in gas chromatography, mass spectometry, coupled GC electrophysiology, and behavioral paradigms. Experience with transcriptomics and bioinformatics and knowledge of pest control are an advantage. Interpersonal qualities should be excellent as the project includes good interactions with stakeholders, including advisors and growers. The candidate should be fluent in English.

As postdoctoral appointments are career-developing positions for junior researchers, we are primarily looking for candidates with a doctoral degree that is three years old at most.
