Uppsala University is a comprehensive research-intensive university with a strong international standing. Our ultimate goal is to conduct education and research of the highest quality and relevance to make a long-term difference in society. Our most important assets are all the individuals whose curiosity and dedication make Uppsala University one of Sweden’s most exciting workplaces. Uppsala University has over 54,000 students, more than 7,500 employees and a turnover of around SEK 8 billion.

At the Section of Radiology, Department of Surgical Sciences, Uppsala University, education and research is pursued within the topic Radiology. The main emphasis is on diagnostics and intervention with radiological methods. The topic includes clinical as well as experimental studies. In these studies x-ray radiation, magnetic resonance (MR) imaging, positron emission tomography (PET) and ultrasound is used.

One project within the division concerns studies of cardiovascular disease by use of advanced image analysis techniques (deformable image registration and deep learning) that integrates imaging and non-imaging data including clinical and genetic information. The project will be performed at the research group PET/MR at the Department of Surgical Sciences, Section of Radiology, Uppsala university and includes imaging and study data from UK Biobank (https://www.ukbiobank.ac.uk/), and SCAPIS (www.scapis.org).

Job assignment
In this project, methods for automated analysis of CT and whole-body MRI data from two large scale cohorts, UK biobank and Scapis, will be applied and further developed. The analyses will focus on finding relations between the imaging data and non-imaging data relevant for development of cardiovascular disease. The project will build on methods previously developed and applied in the research group -Imiomics, deep learning, and so-called cohort salience mapping.

The objectives of the project are to:

  • Develop methodology for large-scale image analysis of cardiac CT and MR images.
  • Determine factors (imaging, clinical and genetic) that are associated with the image data.
  • Determine if the technologies can be used to predict future heart failure and other forms of cardiovascular disease.
  • Requirements
The candidate should have a PhD degree in an area relevant for the project or an equally valuable foreign degree. The degree needs to be obtained by the time of the decision of employment. Those who have obtained a PhD degree three years prior to the application deadline are primarily considered for the employment. The starting point of the three-year frame period is the application deadline. Due to special circumstances, the degree may have been obtained earlier. The three-year period can be extended due to circumstances such as sick leave, parental leave, duties in labour unions, etc.

A strong background in medical image analysis (image registration and deep learning), cardiac or medical imaging, is a plus. Knowledge about cardiovascular disease, and statistical analysis using for example Stata, R or similar are meriting. We are looking for a person both interested in developing the analysis technologies further and applying them to answer medical questions.

You are expected to be able to teach in Swedish or in English. Fluency in spoken and written English is a must.
