Department of Chemistry – BMC conducts research and education in analytical chemistry, biochemistry and organic chemistry. More than 100 people work at the department. Project description: We will take a host-virus systems biology approach to elucidate the prevalence of Short Linear Motif (SLiM)-based host-virus protein-protein interactions. Viral proteins mimic human SLiMs to take over the host cell machinery and these interactions have crucial roles in viral infections. We have a unique platform for large-scale screening of SLiM-based interactions. We will screen for interactions among a collection of human bait proteins, which will provide large-scale information on SLiM-based viral hijacking. We will identify host proteins and processes serving as common hubs of viral interference, and validate key interactions through biophysical and virological assays. The project is a collaboration with Per Jemth’s lab at Uppsala University and Anna Överby’s lab at Umeå University.

The position will include expression and purification of recombinant proteins, proteomic peptide phage display, affinity measurements, and potentially crystallization. You will also be involved in bioinformatic analysis and cell based experiments. The position will include summarizing results and presenting them through oral and written presentations, including manuscript writing.

PhD degree in biochemistry, structural biology molecular biology or molecular virology, or related fields or a foreign degree equivalent to a PhD degree in the above listed topics. The degree needs to be obtained by the time of the decision of employment. Those who have obtained a PhD degree three years prior to the application deadline are primarily considered for the employment. The starting point of the three-year frame period is the application deadline. Due to special circumstances, the degree may have been obtained earlier. The three-year period can be extended due to circumstances such as sick leave, parental leave, duties in labour unions, etc.

You should a strong background in protein biochemistry. It is required that you have are flexible, have the ability to work independently on the project, as well as the ability to cooperate with other members of the team as well as with national and international collaborators. You are expected to take initiative, be achievement oriented and have high research integrity.

You should have experience of expressing and purifying recombinant protein, and conducting affinity measurements using biophysical techniques. The project will include handling larger datasets, and hence it is desirable that you have experience of large-scale data analysis. Experience of cell-based assays is valued

The employment is a temporary position  of two years according to central collective agreement. Scope of employment 100 %. Starting date April 1st 2024,  or as agreed. Placement: Uppsala
