Postdoctoral Position Focused on Ecology of Exotic Pine Introductions

Updated: 7 months ago
Deadline: The position may have been removed or expired!

We are recruiting a two year post doc to focus on the ecology of exotic tree introductions.  The Post Doc will be employed at the Department of Forest Ecology and Management at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) in Umeå and is funded for two years. The department includes about 100 people of which 11 are professors. Our mission is to advance the understanding of forest ecosystems and how these should be managed today and in the future.

Exotic trees are introduced all over the world for production forestry purposes. Sometimes these trees perform exceptionally well in those new environments, achieving higher productivity relative to their native range, while also sometimes becoming invasive.  Thus, there is great interest to understand the ecology underlying enhanced performance in introduced ranges, which has implications for both forest production, as well as conservation of native flora. The project is led by Professor Michael Gundale (Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, SLU), with co-supervision by Marie-Charlotte Nilsson.

Duties:

We seek a post doc to focus on the ecology of Lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta), which has been introduced into Sweden, other European countries, as well as Southern Hemisphere countries such as Argentina, Chile and New Zealand.  The post doc would work with already existing data sets related to Pinus contorta introduction, including DNA sequencing data on foliar fungal endo- and epiphytes, soil fungi, as well as the population level DNA from sampling sites in the native range (USA) and the above-mentioned introduced ranges. The post-doc is expected to work with sequencing data of microbes, and/or SNP genetic data of the tree population, and develop already existing data sets into publishable manuscripts.

Qualifications:

Successful candidates will have a PhD in a discipline such as Ecology, Biology, Forestry, or any relevant area of study resulting in relevant skills for the Post Doc project area.  The ideal candidate would have some skills in bio-informatics, multi-variate data analysis skills, and good scientific writing skills, as evidenced through other relevant first-authored publications.  Very good command of the English language is also required, both written and spoken.  As postdoctoral appointments are career-developing positions for junior researchers, we are primarily looking for candidates with a doctoral degree that is three years old at most.
