Updated: 14 days ago
Deadline: 15 Nov 2022

Ref. No. SU FV-3577-22

at Stockholm Resilience Centre . Closing date: 23 October 2022 (Prolonged application time – new closing date: 15 November 2022).

The Stockholm Resilience Centre (SRC) is a leading international centre in sustainability science for biosphere stewardship, at the Stockholm University. The SRC currently employs around 135 members of staff. It was founded in 2007 and is a joint initiative between Stockholm University and the Beijer Institute of Ecological Economics at The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences.

Project description
In the project, we are seeking to use the lens of gastronomy as an entry point for possible solutions to the challenges of the global food system, highlighting how culinary craftsmanship and innovation, from cooks in local communities to chefs of leading restaurants, have the potential to drive shifts towards sustainability. We are hiring a Postdoctoral fellow to focus on the role of gastronomy for biosphere stewardship in land- and seascapes. The research will focus on learning from case studies of links between landscape/seascape management and gastronomy. Diverse knowledge systems have developed techniques for getting both nutrition and cultural satisfaction from diverse land- and seascapes, in ways that are also embodied in local cuisines. The Postdoctoral fellow will also analyze the potential role of gastronomy in incentivizing changes in dietary patterns, from food with high to low environmental impact.

Main responsibilities
The Postdoctoral fellow will be the central focus point for collaboration among several of SRC:s researchers (primarily Dr. Laura Pereira, Dr. Jamila Haider, Dr. Malin Jonell, and Dr Line Gordon) that jointly have started to explore the role of gastronomy for sustainable food systems. The Postdoctoral fellow will be expected to lead the collaborative work through identifying examples of gastronomic land- and seascapes and analyze the opportunities and barriers that these examples offer to a more sustainable and just food system. The Postdoctoral fellow will also further develop the concept of gastronomic land- and seascapes and aspirational gastronomy and work on theoretical contributions of these concepts. This work is expected to be published as academic research papers. There is also room for substantial collaborations with stakeholders in the project.

The Postdoctoral fellow will collaborate closely with other researchers in the Food for Resilience research theme and is expected to contribute to theme activities. The Postdoctoral fellow is also expected to support and lead the development of funding proposals that could help further the research on gastronomy and sustainability at SRC.
