Postdoctoral Fellow in Theoretical Physics (2)

Updated: over 1 year ago
Deadline: 15 Dec 2022

Ref. No. SU FV-4100-22

at Nordita, Nordic insitute of theoretical physics . Closing date: 15 December 2022.

Nordita, the Nordic Institute for Theoretical Physics, was founded in Copenhagen, Denmark, in 1957. It moved to the AlbaNova University Center in Stockholm, Sweden, in 2007, where it is jointly hosted by KTH Royal Institute of Technology and Stockholm University. Research at Nordita covers a broad range of theoretical physics including astrophysics, biophysics, condensed matter physics, gravitation, cosmology and astroparticle physics, high-energy physics, and statistical physics/complex systems. The research activity of the local academic staff is supplemented by Nordita Scientific Programs, which bring together groups of leading experts to work on specific topics for extended periods. There is also ample opportunity for collaboration with faculty and research staff at local universities. Further information about Nordita can be found at www.nordita.org .

Project description
We expect to have openings for two postdoctoral positions in theoretical condensed matter physics in our group (https://tqmatter.org ):

Dynamic Quantum Matter: We are interested in quantum materials that have unconventional, hidden and topological orders. The focus is on dynamics and entangled orders in ferroic, magnetic and superconducting states, odd-frequency superconductivity and Dirac materials.

Machine learning and materials informatics: Applications of this data-driven approach are wide-ranging and cover the search for various quantum materials with special electrical, optical and magnetic properties. Successful candidate(s) are expected to bridge the analytic and ab initio calculations in the framework of density functional theory within the field of quantum materials, including van der Waals and Dirac materials, topological materials, photovoltaics and multiferroics.

Quantum materials and mechanisms for quantum sensing: The successful applicant should have expertise in quantum materials and quantum sensing, with the goal of developing candidate mechanisms and detection techniques using advantages that quantum sensors provide.

Main responsibilities
The position includes conducting a strong research program and interacting with colleagues and visitors at Nordita, Stockholm University, KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Uppsala University, and elsewhere in the Nordic countries. The successful candidate is expected to spend significant time at Nordita, Stockholm University and KTH, building connections between condensed matter, astrophysics and high-energy groups.

Qualification requirements
Postdoctoral positions are appointed primarily for purposes of research. Applicants are expected to hold a Swedish doctoral degree or an equivalent degree from another country.

Assessment criteria
The degree must have been completed at latest before the employment decision is made, but no more than three years before the closing date. An older degree may be acceptable under special circumstances. Special reasons refer to sick leave, parental leave, elected positions in trade unions, service in the total defense, or other similar circumstances as well as clinical attachment or service/assignments relevant to the subject area.

In the appointment process, special attention will be given to research skills in dynamic quantum matter, materials informatics, and quantum matter for sensing.

Terms of employment
The position involves full-time employment for a minimum of two years and a maximum of three years, with the possibility of extension under special circumstances. Start date 2023-02-20 or as per agreement.

Stockholm University strives to be a workplace free from discrimination and with equal opportunities for all.
