Ref. No. SU FV-0429-23
at Nordita, the Nordic Institute for Theoretical Physics . Closing date: 08 March 2023.
Nordita, the Nordic Institute for Theoretical Physics, was founded in Copenhagen, Denmark, in 1957. It moved to the AlbaNova University Center in Stockholm, Sweden, in 2007, where it is jointly hosted by KTH Royal Institute of Technology and Stockholm University. Research at Nordita covers a broad range of theoretical physics including astrophysics, biophysics, condensed matter physics, gravitation, cosmology and astroparticle physics, high-energy physics, and statistical physics/complex systems. The research activity of the local academic staff is supplemented by Nordita Scientific Programs, which bring together groups of leading experts to work on specific topics for extended periods. There is also ample opportunity for collaboration with faculty and research staff at local universities. Further information about Nordita can be found at www.nordita.org .
Project description
The project studies the dynamical and thermodynamical properties of non-equilibrium systems on the micro-scale. Of central interest are Brownian heat engines which use micrometer-sized particles (active or passive) as “working medium” to extract heat from the surrounding thermal bath and turn it into useful work. In addition to their fundamental relevance, the project results will improve our understanding of man-made micro- and nano-machines and of biological energy conversion processes on the cellular and sub-cellular level.
Main responsibilities
The position includes conducting a strong research program and interacting with colleagues and visitors at Nordita, Stockholm University, KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Uppsala University, and elsewhere in the Nordic countries. The successful candidate is expected to spend significant time at Nordita, KTH, and SU, building connections between condensed matter, astrophysics and high-energy groups.
Qualification requirements
Postdoctoral positions are appointed primarily for purposes of research. Applicants are expected to hold a Swedish doctoral degree or an equivalent degree from another country.
Assessment criteria
The degree must have been completed at latest before the employment decision is made, but no more than three years before the closing date. An older degree may be acceptable under special circumstances. Special reasons refer to sick leave, parental leave, elected positions in trade unions, service in the total defense, or other similar circumstances as well as clinical attachment or service/assignments relevant to the subject area.
Special importance is given to research expertise shown, for example, through publications. The applicant's ability to establish and develop collaborations both in research and education is of importance.
Terms of employment
The position involves full-time employment for a minimum of two years and a maximum of three years, with the possibility of extension under special circumstances. Start date as per agreement.
