Postdoctoral Fellow in Metal-organic Frameworks for CO2 capture and conversation

Updated: 10 months ago
Deadline: 22 Jun 2023

Ref. No. SU FV-2193-23

at the Department of Materials and Environmental Chemistry . Closing date: 22 June 2023.

Department of Materials and Environmental Chemistry (MMK), with about 160 employees, is a leading institution in materials synthesis and processing, structural characterization, and materials applications. It includes physical, inorganic, structural, and materials chemistry, the latter constituting one of the leading research directions at Stockholm University. Important characterization methods at the department today are X-ray, electron and neutron crystallography, scanning and transmission electron microscopy, and various spectroscopic methods.

Project description
This recruitment is connected to the Wallenberg Initiative Materials Science for Sustainability (WISE, wise-materials.org). WISE, funded by the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation, is the largest-ever investment in materials science in Sweden and will encompass major efforts at Sweden’s foremost universities over the course of 10 years. The vision is a sustainable future through materials science. Read more: https://wise-materials.org .

The project aims to explore new approaches on design and synthesis of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) for removal of CO2 . The novel materials are expected to be used as sorbents for CO2 capture and catalysts for CO2 reduction reactions. Electron diffraction will be used to study the crystal structures and properties of the MOFs.

Main responsibilities
The successful candidate is expected to be responsible for:

  • Design and synthesis MOFs
  • To develop MOF-based technology for CO2 capture and conversion
  • To study MOFs using electron diffraction.

The postdoc is expected to work closely with other members in the group and collaborate with researchers from academia and industry. In addition to research works, the successful candidate also needs to involve in scientific writing of publications and proposals, and take part in laboratory management.

Qualification requirements
Postdoctoral positions are appointed primarily for purposes of research. Applicants are expected to hold a Swedish doctoral degree or an equivalent degree from another country.

Assessment criteria
The degree must have been completed at latest before the employment decision is made, but no more than three years before the closing date. An older degree may be acceptable under special circumstances. Special reasons refer to sick leave, parental leave, elected positions in trade unions, service in the total defense, or other similar circumstances as well as clinical attachment or service/assignments relevant to the subject area.

The selection will be based primarily on scientific excellence. The successful candidate will join a large research team of students, postdocs, and junior researchers.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Strong background in MOFs or CO2 removal techniques is preferred
  • Experience in crystallography is preferred
  • Experience in electron microscopy/electron diffraction is a bonus, but not essential
  • Knowledge on topology and reticular chemistry of metal-organic frameworks
  • Strong capacity to work independently, including designing and conducting experiments, preparing a high-quality scientific presentations and publications
  • Excellent cooperation and communication skills and ability to work as part of a team
  • Good skills in spoken and written English.

Terms of employment
The position involves full-time employment for two years, with the possibility of extension under special circumstances. Start date 2023-07-01 or as per agreement.

All early-stage researchers recruited into the WISE program will be a part of the WISE Graduate School , an ambitious nationwide program of seminars, courses, research visits, and other activities to promote a strong multi-disciplinary and international network between PhD students, postdocs, researchers, and industry.
