Postdoctoral Fellow in Materials Chemistry

Updated: over 2 years ago
Deadline: The position may have been removed or expired!

at the Department of Materials and Environmental Chemistry . Closing date: 21 November 2021.

The Department of Materials and Environmental Chemistry has about 160 employees and is within the Faculty of Science. Profiled research are within Materials and Structural Chemistry as well as Analytical Chemistry.

Project description
The aim of the overall project is to demonstrate that a sorbent - activated limestone - can be used to reduce eutrophication in the Baltic Sea. Several companies and a County Administrative Board participate in the project. The project is financed by FORMAS and their partners.

Although the nutrient load from land-based sources has decreased in recent decades, phosphorus is released from oxygen-free sediments in the Baltic Sea. In this project, we focus on the use of a type of activated limestone to chemisorb phosphate ions. The sorbent is innovative, non-toxic, sustainable and cost-effective. In our feasibility studies, the results were based on measurements of adsorption of phosphates by traditional methods. The postdoctoral fellow will focus on increasing the reliability by detailed studies of the bond between the phosphate groups and calcium carbonate. Such studies will be performed with measurements of zeta potentials, but also through detailed characterization with IR and solid-state NMR spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction.

Main responsibilities
The postdoctoral fellow will perform studies of zeta potentials for the particles at different pH and evaluate these. In addition, detailed characterization and subsequent analyzes will be performed by IR and solid phase NMR spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction. Some field studies and trips to mainly Gotland will be included.

Qualification requirements
Postdoctoral positions are appointed primarily for purposes of research. Applicants are expected to hold a Swedish doctoral degree or an equivalent degree from another country.

Assessment criteria
The degree should have been completed no more than three years before the deadline for applications. An older degree may be acceptable under special circumstances, which may involve sick leave, parental leave, clinical attachment, elected positions in trade unions, or similar.
