Postdoctoral Fellow in Experimental X-ray Science of Protein Solutions

Updated: over 1 year ago
Deadline: 10 Oct 2022

Ref. No. SU FV-3463-22

at the Department of Physics . Closing date: 10 October 2022.

The Department of Physics is one of the biggest departments within the Faculty of Science and supports a broad range of basic research in experimental and theoretical physics. It has about 250 employees, of which 95 are PhD students. Many have been internationally recruited.

The Department of Physics is part of the AlbaNova University Center, which is a strong research center, and which, in addition to the Department of Physics, also houses the Department of Astronomy, the physics departments at the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) and the Nordic Institute for Theoretical Physics, Nordita.

Project description
The Department of Physics have a postdoctoral position available for a highly motivated candidate for studies in the area of aqueous solutions using x-ray scattering experimental techniques. The applicant is expected to play a key role in understanding the role of water in biochemical reactions by performing cutting edge experiments at x-ray national and international facilities. The host laboratory consists of world leading water researchers with expertise in X-ray diffraction techniques. The position is placed at the Department of Physics and the Postdoctoral Fellow will work as part of the group of Structural dynamics of aqueous solutions (SDAQS). The group activity is related to investigating the structural dynamics of aqueous solutions, including nanoparticles, organic molecules and proteins in supercooled and glassy states.

Main responsibilities
The focus of the project is to study protein solutions in the liquid and glassy phase using X-ray diffraction and spectroscopy. The experiments will take place at state-of-the-art X-ray synchrotrons and free electron lasers, as well as at in-house laser setups at the Department of Physics.

Qualification requirements
Postdoctoral positions are appointed primarily for purposes of research. Applicants are expected to hold a Swedish doctoral degree or an equivalent degree from another country.

Assessment criteria
The degree must have been completed at latest before the employment decision is made, but no more than three years before the closing date. An older degree may be acceptable under special circumstances. Special reasons refer to sick leave, parental leave, elected positions in trade unions, service in the total defense, or other similar circumstances as well as clinical attachment or service/assignments relevant to the subject area.

Qualified applicants holds a Ph.D. in physics, chemistry or biophysics and have the ability to work both independently and as part of a group, and be able to travel abroad for experiments. Experience in x-ray studies at synchrotrons, free-electron lasers or laser physics is favorable. In the appointment process, special attention will be given to research skills.

Terms of employment
The position involves full-time employment for a minimum of two years and a maximum of three years, with the possibility of extension under special circumstances. Start date as per agreement.
