Ref. No. SU FV-0165-23

at the Department of Physics . Closing date: 10 March 2023.

The Department of Physics is one of the biggest departments within the Faculty of Science and supports a broad range of basic research in experimental and theoretical physics. It has about 250 employees, of which 95 are PhD students. Many have been internationally recruited. The Department is part of the AlbaNova University Center, which apart from the Department of Physics houses the Department of Astronomy, the Physics Departments at the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH), and the Nordic Institute for Theoretical Physics (Nordita).

The Department of Physics and Stockholm University is affiliated to Stockholm Dual Career Network (SDCN) that supports expat partners with professional events, career-related advice and by building a social network in their new hometown, www.sdcn.se/ .

Project description
Postdoctor for immediate appointment to work with Prof. Anders Nilsson on the combined experimental/scientific topics of instrument development and CO/CO2 reduction to generate fuels and chemicals. Both topics will be performed in connection with an in-house built ambient pressure X-ray photoemission spectroscopy (APXPS) end station that is situated at beamline P22 at DESY/Hamburg.

This recruitment is connected to the Wallenberg Initiative Material Science for Sustainability (WISE). WISE, funded by the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation, is the largest-ever investment in materials science in Sweden and will encompass major efforts at Sweden’s foremost universities over the course of 10 years. The vision is a sustainable future through material science. Read more: wise-materials.org .

All early-stage researchers recruited into the WISE program will be a part of the WISE Graduate School, wise-materials.org/research/graduate-school/ , an ambitious nationwide program of seminars, courses, research visits, and other activities to promote a strong multi-disciplinary and international network between PhD students, postdocs, researchers, and industry.

Main responsibilities
The successful candidate will carry a responsibility in preparing the experimental set-ups and for organizing beamtimes, performing experiments as well as analyzing data and writing manuscripts. The candidate will be involved in large collaboration teams.

Qualification requirements
Postdoctoral positions are appointed primarily for purposes of research. Applicants are expected to hold a Swedish doctoral degree or an equivalent degree from another country.

Assessment criteria

Suitable backrgound is a PhD in chemistry or physics with thesis work in either catalysis, surface science or x-ray methods. A particular strength is previous work using x-rays to study interfaces under in-situ conditions. The position will be placed at Stockholm University but the individual will travel frequently to DESY in Hamburg.

In the appointment process, special attention will be given to research skills. The successful applicant will be selected based on documented experimental knowledge relevant for the area of study, knowledge of scientific instrumentations and method, analytical skills, personal motivation and team working skills. Well-developed English language skills are required. Knowledge of good English is mandatory. We seek motivated candidates with talent for instrument development, programming and science.
