Postdoctoral Fellow in Environmental Chemistry

Updated: about 1 year ago
Deadline: 15 Feb 2023

Ref. No. SU FV-4727-22

at the Department of Environmental Chemistry . Closing date: 15 February 2023.

Stockholm University has been ranked among the world’s top 30 universities in environmental science. At the Department of Environmental Science, chemical contamminants is a major research focus. Some 100 scientists, graduate students and support staff study the sources, exposure and effects of chemical contaminants as well as their risk to environmental and human health.

Project description
In this project, you will measure the persistence of organic contaminants in aquatic systems using a laboratory simulation test and employing field experiments. The goal is to understand the relationship between biodegradation half-lives determined in the laboratory and in the natural environment. Your laboratory experiments will be conducted with a version of the OECD 309 method that we have modified to increase its environmental relevance. Your field experiments will be conducted in rivers in Europe. You will analyze polar organic contaminants in the samples from your experiments using high resolution mass spectrometry. In comparing the results of the laboratory and field experiments, you will employ benchmarking techniques. You will interact with multiple stakeholders interested in the regulatory application of the laboratory test for persistence assessment.

Main responsibilities
You will be responsible for conducting the project. Support will be provided by the PI, Michael McLachlan, and the co-PIs Malte Posselt and two international experts, Kathrin Fenner (Eawag and the University of Zürich) and Jochen Mueller (University of Queensland).

Qualification requirements
Postdoctoral positions are appointed primarily for purposes of research. Applicants are expected to hold a Swedish doctoral degree or an equivalent degree from another country.

Assessment criteria
The degree must have been completed at latest before the employment decision is made, but no more than three years before the closing date. An older degree may be acceptable under special circumstances. Special reasons refer to sick leave, parental leave, elected positions in trade unions, service in the total defense, or other similar circumstances as well as clinical attachment or service/assignments relevant to the subject area.

In the appointment process, special attention will be given to research skills and your ability to successfully complete the project. Your doctoral degree should be in environmental chemistry or a field closely related to the project. Experience in laboratory or field experimentation is desireable. Skills in the trace analysis of organic contaminants using high-resolution mass spectometry are an asset. High competence in written and oral communication in English is essential.

Terms of employment
The position involves full-time employment for a minimum of two years and a maximum of three years, with the possibility of extension under special circumstances. Start date 2023-05-01 or as per agreement.
