Postdoctoral Fellow in Ecology

Updated: over 1 year ago
Deadline: 30 Nov 2022

Ref. No. SU FV-4013-22

at the Department of Ecology, Environment and Plant Sciences . Closing date: 30 November 2022.

At the Department of Ecology, Environment and Plant Sciences at Stockholm University, research and education are conducted in an international environment. The subject areas are Ecology and Evolution, Ecotoxicology, Marine Biology, Plant Physiology and Plant Systematics. Some of the research has direct environmental and societal relevance and the approach is often broad and interdisciplinary. About 140 people are working at the Department, of which ca. 35 are teachers and researchers and 40 are PhD students.

Project description
The position will be associated with the project “Developing a cost-efficient control program for the invasive plant Lupinus polyphyllus” financed by the Swedish Transport Administration and the research council FORMAS.

The overall aim of the project is to develop a cost-efficient program to control the invasive species Lupinus polyphyllus in Sweden. To reach this aim, we use a two-fold approach. First, we examine in what geographic regions and under what environmental conditions that Lupinus constitute a potential problem. Second, we assess how cost-efficient different management practices are to reduce long-term population growth rates in areas where the species constitute a potential problem.

For the first part, the main objective is to identify the areas and environmental conditions under which the target species is likely to constitute a problem. This will be achieved by using species distribution models (SDM:s). Modelling will be based both on existing citizen science data and on new inventory data across Sweden. Both standard SDM:s, and models that allow modelling of both the potential and realized distribution will be used. For the second part, demographic models (Integral Projection Models) will be used to assess the long-term impacts of different management methods to control lupines. These models will be based on demographic data collected from a series of ongoing management experiments along a latitudinal gradient.

Main responsibilities
The position involves research in terms of one or both of the modelling parts of the project, as well as the design, organization and lead the carry-out of field inventories to collect data for the SDM part.

Qualification requirements
Postdoctoral positions are appointed primarily for purposes of research. Applicants are expected to hold a Swedish doctoral degree or an equivalent degree from another country.

Assessment criteria
The degree must have been completed at latest before the employment decision is made, but no more than three years before the closing date. An older degree may be acceptable under special circumstances. Special reasons refer to sick leave, parental leave, elected positions in trade unions, service in the total defense, or other similar circumstances as well as clinical attachment or service/assignments relevant to the subject area.

In the appointment process, special attention will be given to documented research skills in the fields of species distribution modelling and demographic modelling. The successful applicant should also have experience from field work and a valid driver’s license.

Terms of employment
The position involves full-time employment for a minimum of two years and a maximum of three years, with the possibility of extension under special circumstances. Start date 2023-03-01, or as per agreement.
