Postdoctoral Fellow in Digital Health and Patient Reported outcomes

Updated: over 1 year ago
Deadline: 19 Oct 2022

Ref. No. SU FV-3694-22

at the Department of Computer and Systems Sciences . Closing date: 19 October 2022.

Department of Computer and Systems Sciences (DSV) is one of the oldest IT departments in Sweden and the largest department at Stockholm University with around 6 000 students. The discipline of computer and systems sciences bridges the gap between technology and the humanities, social sciences, and behavioral sciences. The use and design of IT is put in context in relation to people, organizations, and society. DSV offers a stimulating research environment in an international setting.

Project description
This project aims at using contextually appropriate digital health technologies to empower patients with chronic illnesses in low resource settings through provision of health education, improved communication with healthcare providers, and linkage to peers (“expert patients”). It will also explore the impact of this patient empowerment on patient reported outcome measures (PROMs), and the feasibility of collecting PROMs using digital health or mHealth platforms.

Activities will include design, development, and implementation of the digital health solutions; development and/or adaption and validation of PROMs, and evaluation of the digital health solution in terms of usability, acceptability, fidelity, and impact on PROMs. The research will be mixed methods and will employ principles of design science research and implementation science.

The postdoctoral position is situated within Digital Futures https://www.digitalfutures.kth.se/ a research collaboration between KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm University and RISE Research Institutes of Sweden with the vision to solve societal challenges through digital transformation. This project contributes to the Digital Futures theme “Cooperate” (between patients, caregivers and healthcare providers), and the societal context of “Rich and healthy life” - see Digital Futures Strategic Research areas here: https://www.digitalfutures.kth.se/research/ .

The successful candidate will work with Dr Caroline Wamala Larsson at SPIDER (Swedish Programme for ICT in Developing Regions) Stockholm University and in close collaboration with Dr Susanne Nilsson of Integrated Product Development and Design unit at KTH (Royal Institute of Technology).

Main responsibilities
We are looking for a postdoctoral fellow with a background in Health Informatics with research experience on patient empowerment, patient-facing digital health solutions, and self-reported patient outcomes in low income countries.

The research will be interdisciplinary in nature and it will draw upon links between health informatics, healthcare service provision, health system strengthening, user-centered product design and development and relevant social sciences. The main responsibilities of the postdoctoral fellow will include both empirical and design work related to digitalisation of non-communicable disease management,  patient reported outcome measures and healthcare service quality.

The postdoctoral fellow is expected to present their work at international meetings, and publish in journals, and to collaborate with colleagues both at Stockholm University and KTH on other relevant initiatives. They are also expected to develop their own research network that contributes to SPIDER’s overall network approach to international development.
