Ref. No. SU FV-0815-23

at the Department of Computer and Systems Sciences . (Closing date: 20 March 2023) Prolonged application time - new closing date: 31 March 2023.

The Department of Computer and Systems Sciences (DSV) is one of Sweden’s oldest IT departments and one of the largest departments at Stockholm University. DSV offers a stimulating research environment and strong research groups in several areas within computer- and systems sciences with well-established national and international connections to leading industrial and academic institutions. The department is located at the Kista campus and has approximately 190 employees and approximately 5000 students.

Project description
The position is associated with the EFRA project on food safety with the main goal to deliver the first analytics-enabled, secure-by-design, green data space for AI-enabled food risk prevention. To this end it will utilize NLP, machine learning and explainable methods for knowledge discovery from heterogeneous data sources (including multilingual data). The intention is to build a novel data management and analytics framework, based on three pillars: (1) Data hub – searchable data integration of heterogeneous data, (2) Analytic tools – used together with the data hub to distill and combine useful insights regarding food safety from available data, and (3) Data and Analytics marketplace – a single resource for stakeholders in food safety to interact with both data and predictions methods for food safety.

The final product will be a set of methods and tools for integrating massive and heterogeneous food safety related data sources, a set of predictive models for learning from these data sources, with emphasis on interpretability and explainability of the models’ rationale for the predictions. A large extent of the data utilized in this project will be in a textual format, hence expertise in the field of NLP, Natural Language Processing, is needed for this position.

Main responsibilities
The postdoctoral fellow will be involved in all parts of the research project with emphasis on NLP and the explainability of machine learning in relation to the food safety domain. This includes collaborating with all project partners, performing data analysis tasks, developing and testing NLP and machine learning algorithms, and publishing research results. All of the above will be done in collaboration with other members of the research group.

Qualification requirements
Postdoctoral positions are appointed primarily for purposes of research. Applicants are expected to hold a Swedish doctoral degree or an equivalent degree from another country.

Assessment criteria

An older degree may be acceptable under special circumstances. Special reasons refer to sick leave, parental leave, elected positions in trade unions, service in the total defense, or other similar circumstances as well as clinical attachment or service/assignments relevant to the subject area.

In the appointment process, special attention will be given to the following skills:

  • Good technical knowledge of data science with emphasis on NLP, data analysis and machine learning methods
  • Experience within food safety research is a merit
  • Excellent communication skills in English and very good programming skills (for example in Python, Matlab, Java or R)
  • The applicant should be highly motivated, flexible, have good communication skills, be able to work independently as well as collaborate with other researchers and practitioners.

Terms of employment
The position involves full-time employment for a minimum of two years and a maximum of three years, with the possibility of extension under special circumstances. Start date 2023-04-01 or as per agreement.
