Postdoctoral Fellow in cloud feedbacks in next-generation climate models

Updated: over 1 year ago
Deadline: 30 Oct 2022

Ref. No. SU FV-3651-22

at the Department of Meteorology . Closing date: 30 October 2022.

At the Department of Meteorology (MISU) at Stockholm University we conduct research and education in an international environment within four main areas: Atmospheric physics, Dynamic meteorology, Physical oceanography and Chemical meteorology. In all these areas there is a strong focus on the climate and on processes important for the climate and its development. The department includes some 75 individuals, of which about 35 are teachers and scientists, 25 PhD students and 15 administrative and technical staff. The department is part of the Bolin Centre for Climate Research that, together with other departments at the university covers research of most of the important aspects of the climate system and the Swedish e-Science Research Centre (SeRC), where we together with KTH and other universities develop e-Science tools and infrastructure to promote scientific breakthroughs in climate science.

Project description
The position will be associated with the EU project Next Generation Earth Modelling Systems (NextGEMS) which aims to develop and exploit global kilometre scale cloud resolving coupled models. The work in this fellowship is focused on climate change feedbacks, with a focus on clouds, and sea surface temperature pattern effects on transient warming.

Main responsibilities
The position involves conducting research with a focus on cloud and climate change feedbacks in response to increasing CO2 concentrations and to link these with the sea surface temperature patterns that arise in response to global warming in global cloud resolving models. Some of the experiments needed for this work will be conducted within the NextGEMS project, and the applicant will have possibilies to conduct additional experiments on European large scale supercomputers.

Qualification requirements
Postdoctoral positions are appointed primarily for purposes of research. Applicants are expected to hold a Swedish doctoral degree or an equivalent degree from another country.

Assessment criteria
The degree must have been completed at latest before the employment decision is made, but no more than three years before the closing date. An older degree may be acceptable under special circumstances. Special reasons refer to sick leave, parental leave, elected positions in trade unions, service in the total defense, or other similar circumstances as well as clinical attachment or service/assignments relevant to the subject area.

The doctoral degree must be in meteorology, oceanography, climate science, or in a related field.

In the appointment process, special attention will be given to research skills with a focus on the climate change feedbacks and pattern effects, as well as practical skills working with global cloud resolving models and analysing very large datasets.

An excellent command of written and spoken English is required.

Terms of employment
The position involves full-time employment for a minimum of two years and a maximum of three years, with the possibility of extension under special circumstances. Start date 1 April 2023 or as per agreement.
