Description of the workplace
Lund University Diabetes Center (LUDC; www.ludc.med.lu.se) is inviting applications for a position as a bioinformatician for employment as a postdoctoral fellow.
LUDC is one of the largest diabetes research centers in the world with approximately 300 researchers and employees working to improve the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of diabetes. The center combines expertise in genetics, epidemiology, statistics, bioinformatics, molecular and cell biology, physiology and clinical diabetes and endocrinology to achieve these goals.
LUDC has large unique biobanks and databases of whole-genome data linked to national registries that provide information on disease etiology and progression as well as outcome and treatment. The center has internal platforms for most molecular genetic methods and Metabolomics. Omics information combined with comprehensive phenotyping enables a systematic medical approach to analyze the complexity of diabetes.
We aim to create a good working environment based on respect and consideration in our relationship with each other. We aspire to create an environment that promotes development and is stimulating for all employees.
Area of research
A central theme of LUDC is to develop precision medicine to improve the health and quality of life of diabetes patients. The postdoc position is located within the research group Hypertension and Cardiovascular Research led by Professor Olle Melander and is located at the Clinical Research Center (CRC) in Malmö.
Duties
We are looking for a qualified candidate who will be central to the further development of advanced biostatistics in genetics of importance for cardiometabolic diseases and metabolic disorders that precede cardiometabolic syndrome, within the framework of Professor Olle Melander's research group Hypertension and Cardiovascular Research.
The project will primarily focus on investigating the associations between both common and uncommon genetic variations and the risk of future cardiovascular disease and diabetes in population-based studies.
We expect the applicant to be an experienced bioinformatician/statistician who can analyze large data sets using complex statistical methods, can summarize and present the results in a report including publication-ready tables and figures, and to contribute to article writing.
Required qualifications
- PhD in biostatistics, bioinformatics, genetic epidemiology or related field, with a proven track record in applying quantitative methods for data analysis as well as programming experience.
- Extensive experience in analyzing "genome-wide association studies" (GWAS), including genetic risk scores, Mendelian Randomization and in using bioinformatics to aggregate and analyze rare genetic variants from whole-genome or exome-wide sequencing (Burden test, SKAT algorithms).
- Quality control of genotype, exome, and imputed data
- Experience with UK Biobank Data, and DNA Nexus platform
- Meta-analysis techniques
- Skills in R.
- Ability to collaborate in an interdisciplinary team, which includes physicians, nutritionists, laboratory scientists, bioinformaticians and data analysts.

Desired qualifications for the employment are
- Education in bioinformatics, genetics or medicine.
- Experience using reproducible research tools (e.g., RMarkdown, Git, Conda).
- Genome analysis software like plink, EPACTS, Regenie
- Knowledge and experience of other programming languages (e.g. Python, Bash).
- Experience of working in an international environment.
Eligibility
Eligible to be employed as a postdoctoral fellow is a person who has completed a doctoral degree, or a foreign degree deemed equivalent to a doctoral degree, in the subject area of the employment and which was completed no more than three years before the date of decision on employment. If there are special causes, the doctoral degree may have been completed earlier than the above-mentioned three years.
Terms and conditions

The employment is time-limited according to the agreement, "Agreement on fixed-term postdoc employment", between the employee and labor organization representatives (Swedish Agency for Government Employers, OFR's, Saco-S and SEKO) dated 2021-11-19.
Instructions for application
A complete application must include:
- a personal letter in which you describe how you meet the qualifications sought.
- a CV.
- a list of publications.
- contact information to three references.
- diploma/degree certificate (including grade transcript).
- other documents that you would like to be considered (e.g. letters of recommendation).
