Deadline: 30 Apr 2024

Ref. No. SU FV-1046-24

at the Department of Physics . (Closing date: 15 April 2024.) Prolonged application time – new closing date: 30 April 2024.
The Department of Physics is located in the AlbaNova University Center and has approximately 240 employees, 250 students at undergraduate level and 95 graduate students. There are four research subjects within the postgraduate program: Physics, Theoretical Physics, Chemical Physics and Medical Radiation Physics. These subjects span over several research groups with different research activities. For information about the Department of Physics, see: www.fysik.su.se/english .

Project description
The Department of Physics offers a postdoc position available for a highly motivated and enthusiastic candidate for studies in the area of biomolecular physics. The applicant is expected to play a key role in exploring the physics of biomolecular condensates which are linked to the emergence of life by concentrating key chemicals that facilitated the formation of the earliest stable cells. This is a highly interdisciplinary project in the crossroads of biophysics, data science and physical chemistry.

The current project aims to development of advanced microdroplet reactor setups which offer precise control over biomolecular condensation and are designed for experiments at large-scale facilities, such as X-ray storage rings and X-ray free electron lasers (XFELs).

Main responsibilities
You will be part of a team exploring biochemical reactions by performing cutting-edge experiments at X-ray national and international facilities. The host laboratory consists of world leading water researchers with expertise in coherent X-ray diffraction techniques. The position is placed at the Department of Physics (Albanova) and the postdoc fellow will work as part of the group “Structural dynamics of aqueous solutions” (https://sdaqs.fysik.su.se/ ).

Qualification requirements
Postdoctoral positions are appointed primarily for purposes of research. Applicants are expected to hold a Swedish doctoral degree or an equivalent degree from another country.

Assessment criteria
The degree must have been completed at latest before the employment decision is made, but no more than three years before the closing date. An older degree may be acceptable under special circumstances. Special reasons refer to sick leave, parental leave, elected positions in trade unions, service in the total defense, or other similar circumstances as well as clinical attachment or service/assignments relevant to the subject area.
Qualified applicants hold a Ph.D. and proven research experience in one (or more) of the following areas:

  • Chemical physics, soft-matter or physical chemistry background and knowledge of X-ray methodologies at large scale facilities, such as X-ray synchrotrons and XFELs
  • biophysics of biomolecular condensate formation and hands-on biolab or chemistry skillsets, suitable for sample preparation and characterization,
  • computational physics or computer science background, with proven experience in python-based data analysis and usage of high-performance computing (HPC),
  • laser-based physics for the temperature jump experiments or engineering background and familiarity with vacuum technologies for the design of sample chamber.

Terms of employment
The position involves full-time employment for a minimum of two years and a maximum of three years, with the possibility of extension under special circumstances. Start date per agreement.
