Postdoctoral Fellow in Baltic Sea Research with focus on methane dynamics

Updated: almost 2 years ago
Deadline: 07 Oct 2022

Ref. No. SU FV-2484-22

at Stockholm University Baltic Sea Centre . Closing date: 2022-07-10.

The Baltic Sea Centre at SU focuses on the great challenges of the Baltic Sea and will, through an interdisciplinary approach, contribute knowledge to authorities and other stakeholders. Approx. 40 employees at BSC support and develop SU's marine operations by providing infrastructure such as field stations, ships and marine modeling for research and education. BSC manages the field resources Askö Laboratory and the new RV/Electra and coordinates the marine operations from SU within CoastClim.

Project description
Stockholm University (SU) and University of Helsinki (HU) have entered into a strategic partnership where one of the key areas is Baltic Sea research Within the Centre for Coastal Ecosystem and Climate Change Research (CoastClim; www.coastclim.org ) scientists from both Universities explore the links between coastal biodiversity, carbon cycling, and climate feedbacks. To strengthen this joint research initiative, we are now inviting applications for one postdoctoral position focused on methane dynamics in the Baltic Sea.

We are looking for a scientist to be part of a growing team of researchers exploring the role of the coastal zone in the functioning of the Baltic Sea ecosystem. We are looking for a candidate with experience and a strong interest in at least one of the following areas, with a particular focus on the coastal zone:

  • Geochemistry
  • Sediment diagenesis
  • Biogeochemical modeling

Main responsibilities
The PostDoc will join a research group that applies a unique methodological approach that combines CH4 modeling, in terms of both sediment reactive- transport modeling and Baltic-scale physical-biogeochemical modeling, with biogeochemical analysis including stable isotopes, geophysical methods and non-invasive measurements of CH4 distribution continuously in water column.

The successful candidates will be expected to be active in numerical modelling, field and laboratory work, advise graduate students, and engage in inter-disciplinary research and public outreach. Comparative field studies at both Askö Laboratory (SU) and Tvärminne Zoological Station (HU) are expected.

Qualification requirements
Postdoctoral positions are appointed primarily for purposes of research. Applicants are expected to hold a Swedish doctoral degree or an equivalent degree from another country.

Assessment criteria
The degree must have been completed at latest before the employment decision is made, but no more than three years before the closing date. An older degree may be acceptable under special circumstances. Special reasons refer to sick leave, parental leave, elected positions in trade unions, service in the total defense, or other similar circumstances as well as clinical attachment or service/assignments relevant to the subject area.

The ideal applicants have a PhD in Marine Geochemistry, Biogeochemistry, Ecosystem modelling or related disciplines and strong publication records.

Requirements:

  • Familiarity with sediment dynamics of geochemical elements sampling and analyses
  • Experience in biogeochemical modelling
  • Experience with open science software and resources

    Other Merits:

  • Strong communication ability in English, in both speech and writing
  • Experience of project management, marine field work and work in scientific teams.

Terms of employment
The position involves full-time employment for a minimum of two years and a maximum of three years, with the possibility of extension under special circumstances. Start date as per agreement.
